"Winter! Horrace! I've stabilized the rift! If you can hear me, head toward the blue light!"

I spun around, searching for the source of his voice. There, in the corner of the water-filled room, a small point of blue light had appeared, pulsing with the same rhythm as my prophetic markings.

"That must be it," I turned back to Frank. "That's our way home."

"One of many," Frank agreed enigmatically. "But beware, the path leads through her domain."

"Her? Who's her?"

Frank's only response was to swim back into the depths of the water room. "Remember, Winter, the Chalice is a choice. You'll have to break it or become it."

Those words again, the same ones my future self had spoken in my prophetic dream. A chill ran down my spine despite the warmth of Horrace pressed against my side.

"Let's go," I decided, stepping through the doorway into the water room.

To my surprise, I didn't get wet. The strange liquid parted around me, creating a bubble of air that moved with me as I walked. Horrace followed, his tentacles occasionally brushing against the liquid causing it to ripple with patterns.

We made our way toward the pulsing blue light, which grew brighter with each step. Frank had disappeared, leaving us alone in this impossible aquarium. The liquid around us formed shapes as we passed, faces, symbols, scenes that could have been memories or premonitions.

"Almost there," I stroked Horrace's head for a second as he vibrated with tension beside me.

The blue light was now the size of a doorway, pulsing in perfect synchronization with my markings and Horrace's glow. I could feel Milo's energy on the other side, his necromantic magic anchoring the rift between dimensions.

Again, weird that I could sense these things but I chalked it up to my markings.

We were just steps away when the water in front of us suddenly solidified, forming a humanoid shape that blocked our path. It took a moment for the features to settle, but when they did, I found myself staring at, well fuck, myself.

Not the older version from my vision, but me as I was now, except this reflection had eyes that glowed with the same blue light as my markings. Her expression was serene but also wrong, too perfect, too composed.

"The Chalice cannot leave," my duplicate spoke, her voice echoing strangely. "The vessel must remain until it is filled."

"I'm not a vessel," I glared. "And we're going home."

The duplicate smiled, an expression that never reached her glowing eyes. "This is home. The space between choices, where prophecy takes form. You created this place, Winter. It is a manifestation of your power."

"Well, I'm un-creating it," I tried to step around her, but she moved to block me again.

"The Chalice must be filled before it can be emptied," she insisted. "The knowledge must be contained before it can be poured out."

"Look, I don't have time for cryptic prophecy talk," my patience was wearing thin. "Milo's holding the rift open, and we need to get through."

The duplicate's smile widened, becoming almost predatory. "I am the keeper of the knowledge. The guardian of what will be. If you wish to leave, you must defeat me."

"Defeat you how?" I was getting a bad feeling about this.

Damnit.

"Prove you are worthy of the prophecy," she raised her hands, and the water around her began to swirl, forming patterns that matched the blue markings on my arm. "Show that you understand what it means to be the Chalice."

I glanced at Horrace, who was watching my duplicate with all twelve eyes narrowed in suspicion. Through our connection, I felt his wariness, his recognition that this entity, whatever it was, wasn't truly me.

"Fine," I squared my shoulders. "What do I need to do?"

The duplicate gestured, and three objects appeared, floating in the water between us: a cup that shimmered with the same blue light as my markings; a small, ornate key; and a mirror that showed not my reflection, but a swirling void.

"Choose," the duplicate instructed. "The cup to accept your fate as the Chalice. The key to unlock the knowledge within. The mirror to see the truth of what you are."

I studied the objects, suspicion growing. "And if I choose wrong?"
