"Two inter-dimensional entities for the price of one," Zane quipped, though his hand rested tensely on what looked like a weapon at his hip. "What could possibly go wrong?"
Ignoring his sarcasm, I approached the breach again, Horrace padding alongside me. The whispers grew louder with each step, the symbols swirling more rapidly as if excited by our approach.
When we were just a few feet away, I paused, studying the tear more carefully. It wasn't ragged as it had first appeared, but composed of intricate patterns that folded in on themselves in impossible ways. The starry light that outlined it wasn't random either, but formed constellations I somehow recognized despite never having seen them before.
"It's beautiful," I breathed.
Horrace trilled in agreement, several of his eyes focused intently on the breach while the others kept watch around us.
"What do you see in there?" Milo called from behind me.
"Patterns," I answered, my eyes following the movement of the glowing symbols. "Like the ones on my arm, but, well, more. Connected. Flowing into each other. And behind them," I squinted, trying to make out shapes in the darkness beyond. "Something's moving."
The moment I spoke those words, the breach pulsed, expanding suddenly by several inches. The whispers intensified, becoming almost deafening. One symbol, larger than the others, drifted toward me, glowing with particular intensity.
Without thinking, I reached out to touch it.
"Winter, don't!" Fenric shouted, but it was too late.
My fingers brushed against the glowing symbol, and suddenly I wasn't in the storage room anymore. I stood in a vast, star-filled void, surrounded by floating prophecies in various states of completion. Some were bright and clear, others faded and broken. They moved around me, occasionally brushing against me as they passed.
And before me stood a figure in a hooded cloak, face hidden in shadow.
"The Chalice-Bearer arrives," the figure's voice was neither male nor female, but something else entirely, resonating on multiple frequencies simultaneously. "We've been waiting."
"Who are you?" I was surprised to find I could speak in this strange place.
"We are the Harbingers," the figure replied, and though I couldn't see their face, I sensed they were smiling. "The shapers of fate. The writers of prophecy."
A chill ran down my spine. The Harbingers, the same thing the cultists had mentioned, the ones who had infiltrated the Bureau.
"What do you want with me?" I tried to keep my voice steady.
The figure moved closer, floating rather than walking. "You are an anomaly, Winter. A vessel not of our making. Your prophecy was not written by us, yet it intertwines with all others."
They gestured around at the floating prophecies. "For millennia, we have guided the flow of fate. Crafted prophecies to maintain the balance between order and chaos. But something has changed. A new player has entered the game."
"I'm not playing any game," I protested.
"Aren't you?" The figure's hood tilted. "The monster returned home. The feather found. Each trial completed shifts the balance further."
With a wave of their hand, they summoned a particular prophecy fragment, one that glowed with the same blue light as my markings. "This was not meant to exist. Yet here it is, rewriting all others. Fascinating."
The fragment floated toward me, and I could see it contained words in a language I shouldn't understand but somehow did. Words about a Chalice, about four guardians, about a choice that would reshape reality.
"You're trying to stop my prophecy," I realized. "The cultists, the attacks, that was you."
"Some of us, yes," the figure admitted. "Others are more curious. We've never encountered a wild prophecy before. One that grew without our tending."
They reached toward me, fingers extending from their sleeve like smoke. "So much power in such a fragile vessel. I wonder what would happen if we were to touch."
Their fingers brushed my arm where the blue markings glowed, and pain shot through me, sharp and electric. I gasped, stumbling backward.
"Interesting," the figure mused. "The connection runs deeper than we thought. You're not just carrying the prophecy, are you, Winter? You're becoming it."
"I don't understand," I clutched my arm, which now burned as if branded. Tears fell.
"You will," they promised, their voice taking on a darker tone. "When the Chalice is full, when the choice must be made. Break it or become it. There is no other way."
