Her eyes stayed on mine like she was looking for more than the words I gave her. She had never been slow, and I knew she could tell there was more behind what happened to Marv than any of us had told her.
“You know who did it?” she asked.
“Not yet.”
“But you finding out.”
It wasn’t a question, so I didn’t treat it like one. “Yeah.”
She looked at me for another second, then patted the side of my face. “Just don’t let finding out cost me another grandson.”
I looked down at her and nodded because making promises I couldn’t keep wasn’t my thing. “I hear you.”
“I know you do.” She opened her car door, then pointed toward the plate in my hand. “Eat that while it’s hot.”
“I will.”
“And don’t give none to them women.”
I smiled. “What women?”
BJ gave me a look that said I wasn’t fooling her one bit before climbing behind the wheel. “Exactly.”
I closed the door for her and stepped back while she started the Cadillac. She rolled the window down before pulling off and pointed one finger at me again. “Tomorrow after church.”
“I said I got you.”
“And answer when I call.”
“I always answer you.”
“You better!”
She drove around the fountain and headed toward the gates, leaving me standing in the driveway with a plate of food in one hand and my phone ringing inside my pocket again. I watched until her Cadillac disappeared onto the street before finally looking down at the screen.
I shook my head and laughed to myself.
“Old lady crazy as hell.” I chuckled to myself.
I lit my blunt at the red light, taking a long pull before letting the smoke drift out the window. Grandma would cuss me clean out if she knew I was smoking before I even made it off her street, but she also knew I was grown. Long as I wasn’t back in the streets or back behind bars, she minded her business… mostly.
My phone rang again this time through the Bluetooth with my assistant Stephaniecalling again. I pressed the button on the steering wheel. “What up?”
“Forgot to tell you, you also have another invitation.”
“For what?”
“The South Florida Luxury Development Summit.”
“I thought I registered already.”
“You registered for the investment conference next month. This is different.”
“Oh okay, that’s fine.” I assured her.
“One more thing…” she stated.
“What is it?” I asked taking a pull off the blunt while releasing the top button of my collar shirt.
