“Thanks for coming tonight,” I say softly.

He swallows. Nods. Moves not a fraction of an inch more.

I get in my car, watching him stand there motionless in my rearview mirror. Reed might not be a gargoyle, but I sure managed to turn him to stone. I smile to myself as I pull away.

Maybe we both need practice.

Rose: Operation Grump seems to be working

Rose: Cat-Reed came into the living room today

Rose: He only stared at me for half an hour, but it’s progress

Reed: Does that make me man-Reed?

Rose: Obviously

Rose: I need tips on how to be even grumpier so he’ll love me quicker

Reed: That’s sunshine talk

Rose: Ugh, you’re right

Rose: I can pretend he doesn’t exist

Rose: I don’t even want to stroke his soft fur

Rose: I can’t be bothered to boop his little nose

Rose: I wouldn’t even like it if he curled up next to me in bed

Reed: You’re resisting like a champ

Reed: What did you do on your day off?

Rose: I worked on a diamond painting craft while I binged a documentary series about a guy learning how to live life to the fullest

Reed: Good documentary?

Rose: Oh, yeah. All about taking risks and having adventures and living your best life

Reed: Who is the guy?

Rose: Chris Hemsworth

Reed: I’m sorry I asked

Reed: Where did you put your stained glass window pane?

Rose: In my bedroom with the rest of my trinkets

Rose: It actually turned out really pretty

Rose: Makes the room glow

Rose: Where’s yours?
