“Come onwhere?”

“I’m sorry, are you new to the concept of snow days?”

“I’m sorry, areyounew to the concept of sleeping in?” she countered, rubbing her eyes.

Suddenly, I had the urge to scale her house, climb in through her window, and watch her go back to sleep.

Was that creepy?

I didn’t know.

I didn’t care.

I was so screwed.

“On snow days, you are basically contractually obligated to do one winter activity before going inside and drinking hot cocoa by the fire. Didn’t you know, El?”

She laughed. It sparkled like the snow in her hair.

“Which winter activity are we doing today, Sawyer?” she asked, like she was resigned to the idea. Maybe even excited for it.

“Well, I cleared a portion of the pond to skate.”

“Already?” She laughed again. Magic. “I don’t even have skates.”

“Natalie has extras! And don’t worry, I already woke her with a snowball, too.”

“Oh my God.” Ellie shook her head, smiling. “Okay, I’ll be down in a bit.”

“Sounds good.” I grinned back at her. “I’ll be waiting.”

I would wait.

And wait and wait and wait for as long as it took for Eleanor Summers.

CHAPTER EIGHT

sully

This one’s for you, Nat. Cheers to beating that asswipe in court last week.

Isnapped a picture of my beer sitting beside Theo’s bourbon at the bar and shot it off to the sibling group chat. Natalie maintaining full custody of Chloe and shaking off her ex in court was the only cause I had to celebrate this week—or really, the only thing that had made me smile inmanyweeks.

NAT: Thanks, Sul. Are you guys out at North Star? Wish I was there to celebrate with you!

Yep, we’re here to watch Noah’s game. Maybe if he beats LA’s ass, we can celebrate him, too.

BLAKE: Pressure’s on, Noah. Don’t let Grayson show you up on the field.

NOAH: Guys, I’m not even playing tonight.

NOAH: Grayson will have to wait for his ass kicking until later this season.

I snorted. Grayson Everett, a wide receiver for LA, was Noah’s college teammate and one of his best friends. We loved watchinggames where they were matched up against each other; it was fun to catch their little on-the-field antics that probably went unnoticed to most people.

Wait, did you get cut? Who’s going to fund my extravagant lifestyle now?

NOAH: Maybe you should move out to Cali. I’ve heard there are some places in Silicon Valley that pay big bucks for computer whizzes like you.
