“You too.”
He disconnected the call and looked at me with stormy eyes. “I’m gonna kill that motherfucker.”
CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
Gideon
“It’s untraceable.”Toni sat in my living room with three laptops open. “Even my guy can’t figure it out.” He peered over the screen at me. “It’s kind of why we use burner phones, too.”
“It has to be Benito. Who the hell else would it be?” Alex stood behind Toni, looking at the computers.
“Of course it is, and I think he wanted you to know that without giving you proof he was doing it,” Danny added.
“What now?” Penn asked.
“Now we see what happens today. The press have been camped out at Steven’s house since Lucy’s announcement yesterday.” I had the television on; every so often they switched to the senator’s Washington DC home, waiting for the man to appear.
It was strange for them to take such an interest in whom two senators were endorsing for one little state, but apparently the Calvern name ran deep into politics and influence. Benito and I were two powerhouses traveling on different roads, and for the first time our paths had intercepted.
“Dean and Rita’s house is secure. I have three teams on it,” Alex said. “Here, too. It’s best we hunker down until we see how this plays out.”
I nodded. “Agreed.”
“In other news, guess who is holding a dinner tomorrow night?” Raff entered the living room, his phone to his ear but eyes on me.
“Who?”
“The new commissioner, John Corbo.”
“Have any of the other commissioners ever done that?” Penn grimaced.
“No. Who told you that?”
“Remember Mari Gianni?” Raff wiggled his phone and I took it.
Of course I remembered her. I hadn’t run into her for a couple of years, but in all fairness until recently things had been quiet. Two years ago when I’d been held in a holding cell while Penn had been kidnapped by Lorcan Anders, she’d been instrumental by being a perfect middlewoman. She’d found things out, called my lawyer, and in the end had assisted in me getting the hell out of there.
“Mari, good to hear from you.”
“Mr. Hendrix, how are you, sir?”
I chuckled. “It’s been busy.”
“Yeah. Sorry to hear that.”
“Speaking of hearing, Raff says you found out about a dinner the new commissioner is holding tomorrow night?”
“He is. It’s strange. The last couple simply came to the station houses and said hi, brought bagels. This guy is having a whole dinner at some country club and invited any cops and detectives who were off duty to attend.”
“What country club?”
“Fisher Country Club.”
I snorted. “I’d bet anything that’s a country club Benito is a member of.”
“Probably, sir.”
“Are you attending?”
