He ate as if everything was business as usual. She had a million questions but didn't know what to ask first. Instead, she drizzled honey from the jar onto her buttered bread, then took a bite. Unusual dinner, but maybe the extra carbs would help her brain function better.
"You have a sweet tooth, m'lady." Gavin winked.
She nodded. "It will probably make me fat."
He shrugged. "It matters not to me."
"Yeah, right."
Once she'd finished the slice of bread, then ate a chunk of hard yellow cheese, she felt more herself. "So, when Wilona's spell is broken, you will no longer be a shapeshifter?"
"Correct."
"What would make that happen?"
"We are unsure as of yet. I hope you will be patient with me and give me more time to figure it out."
Yes, well, what else did she have to do? She could ask to hold the sword and whoosh back to the twenty-first century, but she didn't want to. She'd grown attached to Gavin, dammit.
"What can I do to help?"
"I have nay inkling, but I thank you for wanting to dissolve the curse."
Of course, she wanted the blasted thing gone. She needed her amazing human husband full time. She yearned to go outside during the daytime and take a walk with him. It would be a dream come true to ride Gallagher behind him while not worrying about a witch disguised as a vicious animal attacking them.
After finishing his food and wine, he stood. "I'm going back to bed." He pulled the shirt over his head, tossed it, and lay down on top of the covers naked.
She could not stop her gaze from devouring his stunning male form.
He turned to his side, facing her, his arm propped beneath his head, and observed her. Wow, what a pose. She could not believe how hot and bothered he was already. Which made her feel the same way.
"Would you like to join me?" he murmured, his dark lashes drifting low, almost concealing the midnight blue of his eyes.
Clearly, he knew how to convince her to forget her worries. He need only expose his delectable body for a few moments, and she became nympho-putty.
This gorgeous man was her husband, and it was her wifely duty to share a bed with him.
Hmm. Good excuse, Dani!
Her body already tingling, she pulled off her clothes and climbed onto the high bed. His eyes devilish and sensual, he smiled and rolled to his back. She crawled over him and rested on his muscular body, his hardness pressed against her stomach. He kissed her, his lips and tongue devouring hers while his strong hands stroked down her back to massage her derriere. For certain, he was a man, not a bird.
Don't think of the bird!
She rubbed her body against his and kissed his neck, then gave him a gentle love bite. With a growl, he rolled her onto her back, and with slow, delicious movements, made love to her. He taunted her and made her wait in a maddening mixture of bliss and yearning. When her release finally came, so did his.
"Ow," Gavin grated, then smacked his own shoulder, startling her.
"What's wrong?"
"Damned midges. How did they get in here?" He glanced aside. "The window's open." Naked, he leapt off the bed and closed the glass panes.
A bite pierced her arm, then her leg. "Ouch! They're biting me too!" It felt like a hundred mosquitoes attacking her, sinking their fangs in everywhere, crawling on her scalp and into her ears. She screamed and jumped off the bed. "Get them off me!" She smacked at her own head, arms, and legs.
He helped swat at them. Five minutes later, they had battled the midges down to nil.
"Wait. I think I hear one." She faced the buzzing sound. A tiny insect flew toward the window. She ran after it, but it crawled out through the crack. "It escaped!"
He looked at the ceiling. "I don't hear any more. Let me see your back."
