"Did you enjoy biting me on the ass?" Dani asked.

All humor gone, the woman scowled. "I didn't bite you. I brought the rest of the swarm with me."

"You were the midge that escaped. Then you came back and spied on us, didn't you? Pervert!"

"I find out what I need to know."

"You're sick! We're married, and what we do in private is none of your business!"

"I make it my business. His eagerness for you tells me he could fall in love with you. I'll never allow that to happen."

Dani wondered if he would. Did she want Gavin to fall in love with her? Was she falling for him? Probably.

"After dark, he will come here, attempting to rescue his new bride. But he will fail. My guards will far outnumber his two." Wilona snickered.

Dani wanted to punch the woman's beige teeth out. "Evil bitch!"

Wilona bolted from her chair. "You will regret that slur, you whore! Restrain her, Malcolm!"

Dani tried to duck, but the guard clasped both her arms from behind in an unbreakable grip.

Chapter 20

Dani's cheek still stung from the vicious slap Wilona had delivered. She wanted to choke the witch. The Neanderthal guard dragged her up a narrow set of steps. At the top, he opened a door, shoved her inside, then slammed it closed.

A lock clicked.

"Hey! Untie my hands!"

No response.

"Bastard," she muttered in the cool dimness, then shivered. She glanced around to see a small fire crackling in the hearth and moved toward it.

"I'd hoped the chamber would be warm by now," a deep voice said behind her.

Sucking in a sharp breath, Dani jerked around to find Gavin.

"Oh my gosh!" She almost squealed with both shock and joy.

"Shh," he hissed, dragging her into his arms.

"How on earth did you get in this room?" she whispered.

"I changed form on the roof, then took the guard's clothing and weapons."

"Thank God you're all right."

He pulled back to look at her. "Did they hurt you?"

"No. Just a few bruises." She was thrilled to see him but also worried about his safety.

"Let me cut those bindings loose." He removed a long dagger from a sheath on his belt and sliced the ropes off her wrists.

"Thank you." She rubbed the chafed skin.

Gavin's concerned blue eyes locked on hers, and she found reassurance there. "Are you certain you're well?" he asked.

"I'm okay." She ignored the soreness and minor bruising. "How are we going to get out of here?"
