And at last, I’m not hunting alone.

We drive in silence for a while, the city shifting from the industrial grit of the West Loop to the more residential, heavily guarded streets of the North Side. I watch the way Alessio drives. He’s not just navigating traffic; he’s scanning every intersection, every parked car, every shadow. He’s a man who lives in a state of constant vigilance, a man who knows that safety is an illusion that has to be maintained with blood and secrets.

I wonder what it’s like to be him. To be the one everyone turns to when they’re broken, the one who carries the weight of a family’s survival on his scarred hands. I wonder if he ever gets tired of being the vault.

"You’re staring," he says, not looking away from the road.

"I'm observing," I correct him. "It’s what I do. I look for patterns. I look for the things people try to hide."

"And what do you see when you look at me, Amara?"

I hesitate. I could give him a sassy answer, something about his silver hair or his expensive car. But the air in the car feels too honest for that.

"I see someone who’s been holding his breath for a very long time," I say quietly.

The car swerves slightly as his grip on the wheel tightens. He says nothing, but the silence between us grows heavier, more intimate. I’ve hit a nerve, and we both know it.

"We're here," he says, his voice more controlled than before.

We pull up to iron biometric gates set into stone walls, cameras tracking the car before we reach the guardhouse. Two men in dark suits step out of a guardhouse, their hands resting near their holsters. They see the car, see Alessio, and immediately step back, the gates swinging open with a heavy, metallic groan.

This is the Costa compound. The place where legends are made and enemies are buried.

As we drive up the long, winding driveway, I see the main house. It’s a sprawling mansion, a fortress of brick and stone that looks like it’s been there for a hundred years. Lights are glowing in the windows, casting long shadows across the perfectly manicured lawn.

Alessio pulls up to the front circle and kills the engine. He doesn't get out right away. He just sits there, looking at the house.

"My family is... a lot," he says, his voice low. "They’re loud. They’re nosy. And they’re going to have a thousand questions about who you are and why I brought you here."

"I can handle questions," I say, my hand going to the door handle. "I’ve spent the last ten years answering them from people much scarier than your cousins."

"It’s not just the questions," he says, turning to face me. He reaches across the center console, his hand covering mine on the door handle."Once you walk through that door, you’re inside this war. Do you understand what that means?"

"It means I get to see the ledger," I say, my voice stubborn.

He sighs, a sound that’s half-frustration, half-amusement.

"You’re a difficult woman, Amara Osei."

"And you’re a bossy doctor, Alessio Costa."

He lets go of my hand and gets out of the car. I follow him, the cool night air feeling different here. It doesn't smell like the city anymore. It smells like wood smoke and expensive wine and something else—something warm and human.

We walk up the front steps, and before Alessio can even reach for the handle, the door swings open.

A man stands there, older than Alessio, with a kind face and eyes that have seen everything the world offers and decided to love it anyway. Simple sweater, slacks, more favorite uncle than crime family—except the eyes catch on my name a half-second too long, and I feel Alessio go still at my back.

"Alessio," the man says, his voice warm and welcoming. "You’re late for dinner. Matteo was complaining that his braciole would go cold."

"I got held up, Turi," Alessio says, his tone softening in a way that surprises me.

The man—Turi—turns his gaze to me, and a wide, genuine smile spreads across his face.

"And who is this lovely creature? You didn't tell us you were bringing a guest."

"This is Amara," Alessio says, his hand finding the small of my back and steering me into the house. "She’s staying with us."

Turi’s eyes twinkle with curiosity and something that looks suspiciously like approval.
