“We missed you at Sarah’s golf tournament.”
“I’m sorry I couldn’t make it. I was asked to speak at Howard University’s Family weekend. As an alum, I like to offer support whenever I can. Next year for sure.” After a hardy handshake, the commander escorted them to the records officer. “Grimes, can you give my friends a hand, please?”
“Yes, sir,” said the officer. “What can I help with?”
Carly stepped up to the desk. “I need the police report for the death of Pierce Stone. His body was found either February 22 or February 23 of this year.”
“It’ll be a few minutes while I pull this up.”
Ten minutes later, they exited the police station. Carly had the police report and the coroner’s report in hand.
“Thank you so much, Warren.”
“You could have gotten those reports without me.”
“Not that quickly,” Carly replied. “I don’t have a week to wait.”
“I’m glad I could help, then.” Pausing, he regarded them. “How’s the pretend marriage working out for you two?”
After exchanging lingering gazes, Carly and Ashton smiled. “Best thing we ever did,” he declared.
“I’m very pleased to hear that. Let me know if you need anything else. Be safe,” Warren said and took off down the sidewalk.
Ashton fixed his gaze on Carly. “Where next, boss?”
“The Dirksen Building.”
“You want to tell me what you’re up to?”
She stepped close and inhaled his fresh scent. “The congressional motor pool provides government vehicles to members of congress and high-ranking government officials.”
“And?”
“I want to see if Internado checked out a vehicle on February 22.”
“Because he’s an idiot?”
“The senate was in session that day. I know it’s unlikely, but when working a case, I ask myself ‘what if’. Plus, I never overlook anything. Those vehicles are equipped with tracking devices.”
“How do you know?”
“I called and asked.”
“Smart, beautiful, super fine. That’s my woman.” He clasped her hand. “I couldn’t hold you in my arms tightly enough the past two nights. I want you safe, honey.”
Years ago, he’d captured her heart. Now, he owned it.
They drove to the senate building and Ashton parked around the corner. “I don’t like leaving you alone.”
“No worries. Back in ten.” She dropped a kiss on his mouth. “Mmm, you are delicious.”
She hurried inside and showed her badge to a security guard. Sinclair had gotten her a government ID showing a different name and a photo of her in disguise. After getting directions, she took the elevator to the lower level, entered the motor pool office and waited in line.
When it was her turn, the clerk waved her over to the counter. “Here to check out a vehicle?”
“I’m hoping you can help me.”
“I’ll give it a try.”
