“To get my Glock out of the trunk.”
“I’ll go with her,” Sinclair said.
Pushing past the pain, Carly hotfooted it down the pier.
“Hey, slow down there, mama. What’s the rush?”
She opened her trunk and shouldered the holster, then tucked her weapon inside. That soothed her down. “I feel restless. I can’t explain it, but I need this.”
“Do what makes sense. Just don’t shoot me.”
“Don’t piss me off and I won’t.”
He laughed. “You’re coming back with quite an attitude.”
“No one’s ever tried to kill me before.”
“Welcome to the club.”
She lifted her gaze to his. “Hmm, that’s new information.”
“The past is the past for a reason.”
Side by side, they returned to the boat to find Warren on the phone. “She’s still recovering. I’ll call you back.” Warren shifted his gaze to her. “The police and FBI need to speak with you.”
“I want to talk to my client first. I’ll call her now.”
“Carly, are you pushing?” Ashton asked.
“No.” She shot him a little smile. “Yes.”
Worry lines creased his forehead. “Don’t.”
“It’s one phone call and two conversations with law enforcement. The defense is building its case. We need to make sure Internado doesn’t get off.” She dug out her phone. “Warren, I believe Internado pushed my grandfather to his death. Will you help me prove it?”
“Give me what you have and I’ll get to work.”
As Carly called Erin Murphy, Ashton set a glass of water on the table in front of her. “Thank you.” She shot him a smile, drank down a few sips. “Erin, it’s Carly Stone.” Her throat hurt, but she had to have this conversation.
“You don’t sound so good. Are you sick?”
“Not exactly. I have information regarding your case.”
“Great.”
“I found a paternal match that’s ninety-nine point nine percent accurate. And he may have murdered Rose Aurora.”
“Oh, God. Okay, lay it on me.”
“Senator George Internado is your biological father. He’s been arrested for attempted murder.”
“Only ‘attempted’? But Rose is dead.”
“He tried to kill me.”
“Oh, no! Are you okay?”
“I will be. The police and FBI need evidence in order to build a case against him. I’m going to email you the DNA results, but I’ll have to provide them to law enforcement, as well.”
