“It’s going to be impossible to ID anyone,” Dakota bit out. “Everyone is wearing a fucking mask.”
Providence placed a calming hand on his. “I’ve got this. You want me to work in my bedroom so you can put together your team?”
“Stay. I trust you.”
That elicited a smile.
She’s so damn pretty.
He spent the next hour calling his guys. On such short notice, only Stryker was available. Since Quincy was tentative, Dakota called his brother.
“Hey,” Sin answered.
“I’ve got a job in Maine tomorrow.”
“Need my plane?”
“Yeah, and I’m one short. Can you do it?”
“I need specs.”
After Dakota told him about the Midnight Raper, Sin said he’d call him back.
Dakota chuckled. “Checking with the boss?”
“Yeah, and the Mrs. just walked into my office. Give me five.” Sin hung up.
Dakota eased down beside Providence. “Find anything?”
“There’s a couple who stuck pretty close to Matt once he landed at the bar. The guy is wearing a three-quarter mask and the woman’s been keeping her head down. It’s like they know where the cameras are because I can’t get a clear picture of them. The guy left, but the woman stayed with him.”
Providence fast-forwarded the video. “About ten minutes later, the woman and Matt exited through the main entrance of the convention center. The man might be waiting in a car at the curb, but the cameras don’t cover the street.”
“Rewind,” he said. “I recognize that other couple nearby.”
An unmasked man and woman were leaving the building at the same time. “That’s Kelly and Kevin Borenstein. They’re a husband-and-wife real estate team with Larke.”
Providence made a note. “Luther gave me a slew of federal agency IDs. Alias Elaine Jones. Looks like Elaine is going to pay the Borensteins a visit. Maybe they saw something that can help us find this masked couple.”
Dakota growled. “That video is a major fucking problem.”
“Problem? This is the first real clue we’ve gotten.”
“That masked man and woman with Matt could have been us.”
“Us?” As she played back the video, the color faded from her cheeks. It would be hard to prove it wasn’t them. Two people concealing their faces, plying Matt with liquor, then ushering him into a waiting vehicle.
“Since the police are looking at me…and possibly you…that could be very damaging.”
“Show me how I can access the streetlight cams.”
It took some doing, but he was able to access one down the street from the convention center.
“There’s a four-door sedan.” She froze the frame and enlarged the picture. “That’s our masked driver.” She zoomed in, then jotted down a note. “It’s a Maryland license plate.” She jumped to a different website, logged in, and punched in the plate number.
“Tell me you’ve found the killers.”
She shook her head. “The license plate was reported stolen. One step forward, a bunch back.”
