“Unknown at this time. Maybe he’ll tell you.”

His guts burned with frustration. If it takes me the rest of my sorry-ass life, I will find Beth’s killer.

Marcus drove around to the back of the building, turned off the headlights, and pulled up to the unmarked fire door. Normally bathed in darkness, a glaring light bulb illuminated the area.

What the hell?

A phone buzzed and all three reached inside their sport coat breast pockets.

Rys answered. “Go.” He listened, then hung up. “We’ve got company.”

The fire door burst open and a woman stepped outside. Dakota’s brain screeched to a halt. She was fucking armed for bear with a handgun in her grip and a wild glint in her eyes.

Using her ass as a doorstop, she stood in the doorframe’s shadow, her short, dark hair framing her sharply-angled face. From what he could tell, she was all woman and rocking hot. Dark tank top that stretched against her full breasts. Tight, black shorts hugged her hips and showed off her toned legs. If he could glimpse her ass, he’d be golden.

Marcus rolled down his window. “Good evening, ma’am.”

“Use thefrontdoor like everyone else,” she bit out.

“Tell her I’m getting out,” Dakota said.

“Ma’am, Mr. Luck is exiting the vehicle.”

Dakota stepped out and she cocked her weapon. Her feistiness hit him like a tsunami. Nice and slowly, he extended his hand.

“Dakota Luck. I’m an L3 Dungeon member and a friend of Stryker’s. We play poker in the Travesty room and I’ve got a key to unlock this door.”

Dakota needed to emotionally disarm her. Since the gun was pointed at his scrotum, he’d tread lightly. No smile, few words, no sweet-talking or checking her out. She wasn’t a pushover and she wasn’t a player.

His goal? Get his guys inside that building. Loitering outside was like chum to a shark. She lowered her arm and his balls dropped back into place. He had to admire a woman packing heat.

With her eyes locked on his, she stepped forward and the fire door slammed shut.

Rule number one. Never cut off your escape route.

She shook his hand. Two firm pumps that sent a shock wave up his arm and down to his twitching dick.

“Where’s Mavis?” he asked, hitching a brow.

When she moved into the light, he got a better look at her. Fucking gorgeous. Untamed, gray eyes that bore into his soul. His hollow, empty soul.

“Sabbatical.”

This hardcore gatekeeper had a sense of humor, but he kept his face expressionless, on purpose.

The left side of her mouth lifted. Was she mocking him or smiling?

She eyed the vehicle. “Tell your boys to step out. No weapons or I’ll blow off your teeny tiny boy-balls.”

That smart mouth around his cock would feel so fucking good. “Slowly,” he said to Marcus while keeping his gaze trained on her.

The guys emerged like synchronized swimmers. She gave each a once-over, then flipped her poignant stare back to Dakota.

“I’ll take them upstairs, then you and I will discuss your bullshit membership.”

She turned to unlock and open the fire door.

Rule number two. Never turn your back on your enemy.
