“Is that what you told Cooper?”
“I told him I was gonna work it,” he explained. “This case is personal to me. I messed up your sniper career. Now, you’ve got a chance to prove you’re not a rookie.”
She steeled her spine. “Thank you. Then, let’s get to work.”
Those four simple words—let’s get to work—slashed through him. But she was right. They had no business hooking up.
Doesn’t mean I don’t want to.
Doesn’t mean it won’t happen…
Britain
Brit was goingto have sex with him. Definitelynotat the black site. There were security cameras everywhere. They would need to be together where prying eyes couldn’t find them. Squirreled away, just the two of them.
For now, she was going to shove aside the constant desire—he heat that flushed her cheeks and the ever-present need to be close to him, to touch him, to look at him—and solve their case.
Focus up and earn your creds.
She eyed the white board.
“The first two deaths occurred in DC. The third in Chevy Chase,” she said. “The fourth in Reston. The fifth and sixth at Kurt’s house in Arlington. Were they murders of convenience or was the killer hunting his vics? Did he know them or were they random?”
“I only see one crime tech report,” Rebel said.
“I talked to that tech,” she said. “Hair—but not the victims—was found at the crime scene of the first L, but no match was made.”
They worked together, he at the white board, she compiling everything in easy-to-read progress reports.
“In case you review my notes, come see how I’ve organized everything,” she said.
He peered over her shoulder.
“Each letter in the case has its own report,” she said. “Here’s the evidence for the first L.”
As she explained, she became acutely aware of his breathing. Slow inhale, relaxed exhale. Her breathing was shallow whileher heart hammered in her chest. The effect he had on her was off the charts. It was crazy good, totally hot, and impossible to ignore.
Fighting against the pull, she didnotturn in his direction. If she did, it would be all over. She’d kiss him, they’d get naked. They’d have sex.
And we’d get fired.
No matter what she told herself, she couldn’t shake the urge to bed him.
“Brit.”
Things are gonna get complicated.
“Brit.”
She knew herself well enough to know that when she committed to something, she was all in. She wasnotgonna let it go.
“Britain.”
She blinked away the fantasy. “Yeah?”
“You went somewhere, woman.”
“I’m right here.”
