“You don’t know the first thing about me.”
“I know you’re a rogue agent who almost got himself killed. If anything happens to Britain while you’re working this case?—”
“Nothingwill happen to her.”
“There are no guarantees.” Z paused. “You know that.”
He’s talking about my Dad.
“I would take a bullet for her.”
Z arched a brow.
Progress.
“Where is she staying?” Z asked.
“Talk to your daughter about that.”
“Is she with you?”
“Yes.”
“Dammit. Is she doing that to piss me off?”
Rebel chuffed out a laugh. “She’s staying with me ‘cause she needs a place to stay.”
“And why is that?”
“Philip, you should be talking to?—”
“Answer my question, Joaquin.”
Rebel glared at Z, but now was not the time to get into it. “She walked in on Addison and Hawk… in the living room.”
Z bit back a smile. “I heard about that tonight. She can stay with me.”
“That’s between you two. I didn’t want her movin’ in with some stranger. There are a lot of weirdos out there looking for roommates.”
“Thank you for that.”
“Before you write me off, know I’m fiercely loyal to the groupyoustarted. I’m loyal to my widowed mother. And if it takes me the rest of my life, I’m gonna find the SOB who killed my father.”
“Maybe so, but—” Z protested.
“It’s eleven-thirty. We’re gonna work,” Rebel continued. “Go easy on her. She feels the heat. We all do.”
“One step out of line?—”
“Do your homework on me,” Rebel said. “I’m not the bad guy.”
“You’re a rogue agent.”
“So are you, Philip.”
Though Rebel was done with Z’s attempt at a power play, Z wielded a lot of power, so he’d play nice. For Brit’s sake.
He extended his hand. “I got this.”
