Outside the mechanic’s bays, the afternoon sun shone down on them.

“I’m hopin’ you can help me,” Rebel said.

“I’ve gone straight,” Gordy said.

Rebel counted out five hundred. “I’m lookin’ for brothers Kevin and Steve Hurly. Heard of ‘em?”

“No, dude. Sorry.”

“Still got your connections?” Rebel asked.

“Oh, sure,” Gordy replied.

“They worked for Candyman. You get five-hundred now, another five when you tell me where I can find them.”

“For a grand, I’ll even send you a pic,” Gordy said.

“You got my number?”

Gordy did.

“I’m assuming you need this by—” Gordy said.

“Yesterday.”

“You haven’t changed a bit.” Gordy stashed the cash.

“Text me like you used to,” Rebel instructed him.

“No problem,” Gordy replied.

Britain

As soon asthey entered the condo, Brit downed a birth control pill, chasing it with water.

I’m such an idiot.

She should have taken it when she got home from the doctor, but she’d been preoccupied with taking the antibiotic.

After finding Rebel in the office, she sat beside him, opened her laptop. “Are you running checks on the students?”

“Yeah,” he replied. “You should rest. Doesn’t your throat hurt?”

“No time, and yes, but I got this.”

He stopped typing, studied her face. “Seriously, I’m just requesting a basic check.”

She eyed the list. “There’s, like, a hundred and fifty names. I’ll enter names from the bottom up. Race you.”

He shot her a smile. “What does the winner get?”

“Whatever the winner wants.” Her fingers flew over the keyboard as she requested background checks on the Acorn alum. At one point, she stopped to watch him. He was typing so damn fast, she laughed. “You are definitely competitive.”

“I’m motivated to win.” He winked.

A few minutes later, he leaned over. “I just entered that name. We’re done.”

She held out her hand. “Congrats.”
