“I’ve gotta run.” Brit hurried out, her feet eating up the floor as she made her way toward HR.

Once there, she knocked on the closed door.

Rebel swung it open, shot her a smile. “Here she is.”

After closing the door, she said hello to the HR director, then spoke to Rebel. “We got a match. Forensics came back with a match.”

“That’s great,” Rebel said.

“Britain,” said the director. “Joaquin wants to go on record that he’s involved in an interpersonal relationship with you.”

“That’s correct,” Brit said.

“I’m going to complete the form while you’re both here.” The HR director started filling out the form, talking out loud to herself as she did so.

Brit’s mind was racing. She needed to talk to Cooper. They needed a warrant. Liliana needed to be questioned, possibly arrested.

“And today’s date is February thirteenth,” the HR director muttered. “Almost Valentine’s Day.”

Brit’s brain screeched to a halt. “It’s the thirteenth?”

“Yes,” said the employee.

“Are you sure?” Brit asked.

“Of course, I’m sure.”

Ohgod, I’m late. I’m never late.

Her thoughts jumped to her fatigue and the early-morning nausea, and her heart started thumping in her chest.

Am I pregnant? Relax, you’re not pregnant. You’re on the pill. Ohgod, I missed one. That doesn’t mean I’m automatically pregnant.

“You okay?” Rebel asked.

She flicked her head in his direction. “Okay? Absolutely. Totally. Yup. Good. Good. You?”

He chuckled. “You aren’t acting okay.”

“I’ve gotta talk to you about the forensics report.”

“Okay, guys. I’m all done. The document is in the portal. You can both e-sign with me now or on your own later.”

“Now,” Brit said.

“Let me pull it up.”

After she and Rebel e-signed, the HR director asked if they needed anything else.

“No, thanks. You’ve been great.” Brit stepped into the hallway.

Rebel thanked the HR employee, shutting the door behind him.

“What goin’ on?” he asked.

She fixed her gaze on him. Could she be having his baby? Her head was spinning, her nerves on edge.

“Forensics came back with a match,” Brit said, forcing herself to stay on topic. “The DNA on the lipstick is a match with Liliana Krause.”
