He helped get dinner on the table. Once they were seated at his dining room table, she took his hands, bowed her head. “Thank you, Lord, for giving me grace and peace as I navigate through everything. Thank you for Joaquin. Amen.”
“Amen,” he said.
He studied her face. She appeared composed and calm. Definitely a change from her behavior at ALPHA.
“I didn’t know you said grace,” he said.
“When the spirit moves you…” She twirled the sauce-covered spaghetti around her fork, slid it into her mouth. “Mmm. This is definitely my comfort food.”
He sliced off a piece of chicken parm.
“This is really good, Brit,” he said after swallowing it down.
“I need protein,” she murmured.
“What’s happening with the case?”
After bringing him up to speed, she finished with, “I spent the afternoon working with homicide detective, Nikki Cardoso. She has confirmation that Liliana is flying back from New York tonight.”
She paused to eat a bite of chicken and a forkful of spaghetti. To his surprise, her hands were trembling.
What’s that about?
Though concerned, he’d stay quiet while she laid out the arrest plan.
“We not arresting Liliana at the airport. That would draw too much attention. Videos could go viral and she’d use them to gain sympathy. First, a cult victim. Now she’s been arrested for being the Alphabet Killer. We’ve got plainclothes tailing her. Once she gets home, we’re moving in.”
“Where are Jordan and Honor?”
“Nikki—Detective Cardoso—has agents tracking Jordan and Honor. He’s at home, but get this, Honor drove out to Sanders Ranch.”
“I’m surprised Jordan’s not with her,” Rebel said.
“Same,” Brit said. “She said she needed to talk to her dad about her book.”
Rebel forked pasta into his mouth. “Thank you for making all this.”
“My pleasure.” She drank down her water, patted her tummy. “I didn’t eat much today, so I wanted to get some real food in me.”
“How’s the nausea?”
She laid her hand over his. “All good.”
Her phone rang. “It’s Detective Cardoso.” Brit answered, put the call on speaker. “Hi, Nikki, what’s the word?”
“Liliana just got into a taxi at the airport,” Nikki said.
“Where’s Jordan?” Brit’s gaze floated over Rebel’s face.
“Home, and the daughter’s driving back from the ranch. I’m gonna head out. I’ll meet you there.”
“My partner and I are on our way.” Brit hung up. “Nikki thinks my name is Jules Marshall.”
“How are you gonna handle that when you arrest Liliana?”
“I told Nikki I’m undercover.” Brit pushed out of the chair. “I cannot believe I’m arresting my own mother. I thought her abandoning us was bad, but a serial killer? Ugh, she’s the worst.”
They left the kitchen, retreated down the hall. In the bedroom, they pulled on body armor, attached belt holsters, slid their Glocks inside. Rebel attached a second weapon to his ankle holster.
