“Honor,” Brit said. “Don’t go there.”

Honor began stroking her hair. “I’m sorry. I need to find a bail lawyer.” She pulled her phone from the table. “Oh, wow, it’s five in the morning.” She collected her purse, grabbed her coat. “Thank you for letting me stay here.”

She vanished inside the elevator before Brit could ask where she was headed.

“That’s a woman on a mission,” Rebel said.

Brit slinked close, wrapped her arms around his neck, and sunk her fingers into his hair. That familiar kick of endorphins shot through him, and he held her close.

“Back in two minutes, then we’ll talk,” she said.

His audible sigh followed her down the hallway.

In the bathroom, she wrapped the pregnancy stick in a tissue and tied a bow with a piece of dental floss.

Her phone binged, but she couldn’t let one more distraction stop her from telling him. They sat on the sofa. He clasped her hands. She loved how affectionate he was, how he caressed her skin with his thumb. Soft, tender strokes that helped calm the anxiety coursing through her.

“You’re shaking, babe. “Are you cold?” He covered her shoulders with the throw.

Heaving in a breath, she forced a smile.

Here goes.

She loved him, she did. But their love was so new. Didn’t mean her feelings weren’t real. It didn’t mean their love couldn’t last a lifetime.

No matter what the outcome, their lives would never, ever be the same.

She held out the tissue-wrapped pregnancy test.

Rebel thoughtshe’d been jittery because of the arrest, but the tension in her eyes had his guts in knots. She was ending things with him. Moving out, calling it quits.

Eyeing the tissue with a dental floss ribbon, he smiled. “What’s this?”

“For you. Open it.”
