Brit hadn’t told her or Hawk why she was in town and, to her surprise, Addison hadn’t pressed her. Normally, Addison would ask all about her paintings, even show her a few she’d painted herself, but last night they just chilled.

Being back in the DC area made Brit happy. This was home to her.

While she loved being a Special Op for Z, and she loved painting, those were both solo activities. She’d made a few girlfriends, but for the most part, she was alone. Being with Addison and Hawk made her heart happy.

And while she wanted to ask about Rebel, she didn’t dare do that. She hadn’t fully processed that she’d almost taken him out. A shiver skirted through her as they entered the townhouse.

Hawk was sitting at the kitchen counter finishing a call. Addison sidled close, kissed him hello.

He set down his phone, kissed her back. “How was your workout?”

“Great.” Addison studied his face. “What’s going on?”

“There’s a serial killer out there,” Hawk said.

“In the DMV?” Addison asked.

“Yeah, a murder in Chevy Chase, one in DC, and a third in Reston. They’re calling him the Alphabet Killer.”

“Why?” Brit asked.

“He’s writing a letter on the victim’s forehead,” Hawk said. “The FBI just got involved. Each county thought the murder was an isolated event.”

“What letters?” Brit asked.

“No idea,” Hawk replied.

“Are you headed out?” Addison asked.

“Yeah, I’ve got a bunch of meetings today,” Hawk replied.

Addison stared at him. “Do I—are we—is there a meeting—Oh, Hawk Security. Right, of course. Yup. Okay.”

Brit and Hawk started laughing.

“What was that, wife?” Hawk asked.

Addison shook her head. “Nothing. All good. Will I see you later?”

“I hope so. We’re married. We live together, so yeah, we wind up here at the end of the day.” He shot her a smile. “I’m just messin’ with you. I’ve got a meeting later today, so I might run into you. If not, I’ll grab dinner.” He slid his gaze to Brit. “You want Mexican? Thai? Indian?”

“I was thinking of cooking for you guys,” Brit replied. “I mean, you’re letting me crash here.”

“You two work that out.” After stealing a kiss from Addison, he said, “Love you, babe.”

“I love you too,” she replied.

After Hawk left, Brit said, “I cannot stop smiling whenever you two are together. It’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. There’s so much kissing.”

Addison smiled. “We’re very happy. We’ve been talking about babies.”

“You’re gonna make the best mom.”

“Well, I definitely know whatnotto do.” After a beat, Addison added, “Do you ever think about her?”

“Who?” Brit hated when Addison brought up their mom. She headed into the kitchen, poured two mugs of coffee, then went in search of creamer.

Addison opened the refrigerator, pulled out containers of milk, oat milk, and soy milk.
