“Only if I get absolved of them.”

“Not up to me,” he replied, the grittiness of his deep voice rocking through her.

“This time, it is,” she replied.

“Get a coat,” he said. “We’re goin’ for a walk.”

At the front closet, she shouldered into a jacket. On went gloves before she returned to the kitchen.

Rebel said something, Addison and Hawk burst out laughing. His breathtaking smile with those stunning pearly whites set her insides on fire.

“Let’s go.” The snap in Rebel’s tone plucked her from her dreamy thoughts.

They walked into the foyer. “I should let Addison know?—”

“She knows.”

Addison joined them. “It’s really pretty along the river.”

“We’ll be back in a few,” Rebel said.

They left out the front door, walked down a short, well-lit path to the walkway that ran parallel to the river. The wind whipped around them and her eyes watered from the bitter cold.

“Who are you?” he asked.

“Britain Skye,” she replied.

“If this is gonna be twenty questions, I’m all in,” he said. “Were you in Texas recently? To be more specific, a small town near Kingsville?”

“Yes.”

“What a small effin’ world. I was there too. Did you see me?”

She shivered, but not from the cold. “I did.”

“Why didn’t you say hey? We coulda grabbed a cuppa coffee and caught up.”

“I was working.”

“No shit.”

She couldn’t miss the bite in his tone.

“You wanna tell me why you took out those three men and cost me the biggest fentanyl bust of my career?”

She pulled to a stop on the river walkway, narrowed her gaze at him. “Because it was my job.”

The bright moon glanced off his face, brightening his translucent eyes. “Yeah, I’m gonna need more than that.”

The stare down continued until she crossed her arms. “Did you ever, for one freakin’ second, think about this fucked-up scenario from my perspective? I get an assignment. I follow theorders from my handler. I show up to complete the mission. You show up. I just happen to know you… and I know you well. I know how you taste when I kiss you. I know what it’s like to feel you inside me. How I feel when you stare into my eyes, how you make me feel alive when you hold me in your arms and kiss me?—”

Their bodies came crashing together, the kiss hot and wild, the streams of desire running rampant through her. His tongueplunged into her welcoming mouth, and she matched his thrusts with her own, while she pressed close against him. Being in his arms, kissing him, she couldn’t get enough. Like a drug, she wanted more, more, more.

And like an addict, she would never get her fill.

Reality snapped her out of her sex-fogged brain. She broke away, stood there trying to catch her breath.

“If Ihadn’tknown you, I would have put a bullet betweenyoureyes too,” she rasped. “Think aboutthatwhen you curse me about your stupid, fucking case.”
