Grateful she no longer had to work with Karen, Brit quickened her step. Her stomach was growling but she’d wait until later to grab lunch.
Time to meet my new partner. Anyone is better than Karen.
Down the hallway she went, pausing in front of Providence’s open door.
Tap-tap.
Providence smiled. “Hey, Brit. Come on in.”
She stepped into Providence’s office. “Cooper is moving some things around and he asked me to work with you on finding me a new office.”
“Hmm. Why’s that?”
“I’m getting a new mentor, and it might be better if Karen and I don’t continue working in the same space.”
Providence shut her office door. “What’s going on?”
“Not the right fit.”
“Why didn’t you come to me?”
“I worked for Z,” Brit said, “So, I’m used to a somewhat stressful environment. This was like that, only worse.”
Providence picked up her desk phone and made a call. “Donetta, do you have any free cubicles? Okay. Thanks.” She hung up, fixed her attention on Brit. “Unfortunately, we’re doubled up in the offices and there aren’t any open cubicles on the Internet team. For now, you’ll have to stay with Slash and Karen.”
“I understand. Thanks for trying.” Brit headed toward the conference room.
The conference room door was closed.
Knock-knock.
She opened the door.
Her brain screeched to a halt as hit after hit of adrenaline zinged through her. Sitting there, munching down on a sandwich was Joaquin Dillinger.
Her heart skipped a beat, then began beating a frenetic rhythm in her chest.
Frozen on the spot, she couldn’t move.
“How you doin’?” His deep, sexy voice rumbled out of him, his relaxed cadence sending a burst of heat through her.
“Hey. Hi.” She couldn’t stop staring at him. Rebel in a crisp white dress shirt and black pants was a total scene stealer. He’dpulled his hair into a man bun that sat on the top of his head. Looked like he’d trimmed his beard too.
Get it together. Now!
“I must be in the wrong conference room.” She went to leave.
He pushed out of the chair, pulled the door wide. “Come on in.”
Now inches away, she stood there studying his handsome face. The energy thundering off him was like a freight train roaring down the tracks. While his stance was relaxed, the intensity in his eyes burned right through to her soul.
Breathe.
As he returned to the table, she checked out his backside. Broad shoulders and his muscular ass had her biting back a moan.
Wow, he cleans up good.
“Hungry?” He pulled out a few sandwiches.
