She smiled. “Yeah, me too.”
Silence.
She opened her eyes, rolled onto her side, and peered up at him. “For real?”
“Ma’am,” he said. “You can’t be flashing your fantastic breasts. I’ll want to touch them, then I’ll lose my massage license.”
On a laugh, she rolled onto her stomach. “We can’t have that, can we?”
He massaged her lower back and she flinched.
“You did a job on yourself,” he said.
“I just overdid it, that’s all. What kinds of hits do you go on?”
“Monsters ALPHA can’t touch because they’ve never been captured.”
“Like Mara’s killer?” she murmured.
“Like Mara’s killer.” He moved to her glutes and she released a long sigh.
“I would work that case with you,” she said.
He placed his lips on her back, kissed her. “Let’s find these missing women first. At least, with them, there’s a chance they’re still alive.”
“Will you continue to work for Luciano?”
“Yes, but even Sin doesn’t know that.”
“You’re really putting yourself out there with me.”
He gave her ass a gentle squeeze before moving on to her thighs. “I’m trusting you with things that could land me in prison. If I hold back, keep anything from you, this will never work.”
She grew quiet while he massaged the backs of her legs. He had a point. If they were going to try again, it would be eyes wide open. She would keep his secrets and, in exchange, she would have to trust him not to hurt her again.
“Babe,” he murmured, “turn over so I can massage your arms.”
When she rolled over, he covered her with the sheet, then set her arms on top. With tender strokes he began.
She studied his face, letting her gaze roam over every feature. Things were moving so fast, yet—in her innermost heart—she loved having him in her life again.
“This might not work,” she said.
“The massage? Sure it will.”
She smiled. “Us.”
“Yes, it will,” he said, his confidence front and center.
“You don’t know that. Maybe we were meant to be each other’s first loves only.”
His gaze found hers as he massaged her triceps. “Firstandlast. I wouldn’t have told you something that would get me firedandput me in prison if I wasn’t confident about winning you back.”
She wasn’t going to argue. What would be the point? He was right. It was just a matter of time before her heart would lead her, and she’d go tumbling back down the rabbit hole. Her only question…
When she landed in Wonderland, would he catch her or would he let her fall?
