It’s a date.

She pulled her hair into a ponytail, leaving her bangs to frame her face.

I don’t do dates.

Stepping back, she checked herself in the bathroom mirror. “Well, you’re doing this date, so get it together.”

The doorbell rang and she went downstairs.

She opened the door and her heart skipped a beat. Carrera looked like he’d stepped out of a fashion magazine. From his perfectly styled hair, to his shiny black shoes, he was the epitome of power, sex appeal, and charisma.

Time stopped while she stared into his eyes.

“You look stunning.” He stepped inside, pulled her close, and kissed her cheek. “You smell good too.”

Then, he gave her a very slow, very deliberate once-over. “Gorgeous.”

She smiled. “You clean up well.”

He looked freakin’ amazing in a white collared shirt, black pants, and black sport coat. She picked up the backpack next to the door. He took it from her, and they left. Once in his ALPHA SUV, he drove out.

“Who’d you talk to today?” he asked.

“Two detectives, and I made some calls about the missing women who didn’t have reports filed on them.”

“How’d that go?”

“The detectives didn’t have much. I spoke with a landlord for one of the women who’d gone missing three months ago. He ended up selling her things and renting her apartment.”

“He never called the police?”

“He said he did, but there was no record that law enforcement talked to him. I spoke with her neighbors. Most had no idea who she was.” She glanced over at him. “What kind of world are we living in? People just don’t give a damn.”

He clasped her hand. “I give a damn.”

She smiled. “Good for you, Superman.” Then, she pulled out her phone. “I check in with Elsa every day. She dialed, put the call on speaker.

“Hello, angel,” Elsa answered.

“Elsa, hi, how are you?”

“I’m reorganizing my kitchen drawers,” Elsa said.

“Have you eaten?”

“Not yet. Are you stopping by?”

“I can’t tonight,” Slash said. “How ‘bout tomorrow?”

“I’d love that.”

“I can pick up something.”

“Sushi is good. Or that dish I like from the Mexican restaurant.”

“What about the fusion restaurant?’

“Any of those work. Can you pick up a few things for me at the store?”
