“Sparkling?”

Slash nodded.

“Two,” Carrera said.

“Would you prefer wild-caught salmon or free-range chicken?” the host asked.

They both selected salmon.

“Would you like wine with dinner?”

“I’d love a glass, but I’ve got to work,” Slash said to Carrera.

“Just the sparkling waters,” Carrera said.

With a nod, the host left.

“You can drink,” Slash said.

He leaned close and pressed his mouth to her ear. “I don’t need alcohol. I need you.”

The energy shifted. He pulled her close, kissed her. “I’ve got your back, especially at Blue Suit. Those men are piranhas.”

“I’m not afraid of them.” Then, she shot him a smile. “But I appreciate that you’re there with me.”

“Let’s head to the bow.” He clasped her hand.

She loved that he took her hand. Loved that he insisted that she take a quick break from the stress of the cases.

They stood at the front of the vessel as the ship pulled out of the marina before gliding effortlessly down the river. He stood behind her, wrapped his arms around her, and kissed the top of her head. Tingles skittered through her.

Being with him felt incredible, a dream come true. She’d never stopped loving him, but loving him now left her feeling incredibly vulnerable.

“Thank you,” he murmured as he wrapped his arms around her.

“For what?” she asked.

“For being here with me.” He kissed the top of her head.

As she gazed at the buildings along the shoreline, she grasped his strong forearms. They passed another Carrera Cruises vessel, and everyone waved.

She and Carrera waved back as the host returned with their drinks. “Would you prefer to dine inside or out?”

“I’d love to sit outside,” Slash replied before sliding her gaze to Carrera.

“Absolutely,” he agreed.

They took the beverages, and the host disappeared inside.

“To a perfect evening,” Carrera said.

After tapping his glass and sipping the icy drink, she asked, “What are we doing here?”

“We’re taking a break from the mayhem,” he replied.

She peered into his large brown eyes, eyes that could see into the depths of her soul. “Us,” she said. “I’m talking about us.”

He leaned close and whispered, “We’re falling in love.”

“Ohmygod,” she whispered. “Oh. My. God.”
