“Oh, sorry, happy anniversary,” said the server. “Are you married?”

“No,” Slash replied.

“Not yet,” Carrera said.

“Easy, cowboy,” Slash said, but she couldn’t kill the smile.

“Where’d you get that nickname?” the server asked.

“I’m good with knives.”

The server’s eyes widened. “Okaaaay.” She flicked her gaze to Carrera, then back to Slash. “We have some amazing desserts. I’ll bring you a sampler tray.”

The server left, and Carrera grasped her hand while they stared out at the water.

Truth was… she liked the doting, the attention, the groveling. She liked that he was going out of his way to let her know she was important to him.

“Thanks for tonight,” she said, “and for confiding about work. You’re right. I did need a break.”

“I’ve got something fun planned for later.”

As she stared into his eyes, desire flamed low in her belly. “That sounds intriguing.”

The boat slowed, then stopped. A moment later, the hostess, the server, the chef, a cook, and the captain appeared on deck.

“Ready?” said the captain.

They sang happy anniversary to a completely unfamiliar tune and mostly off key. Slash loved their originality. When they finished, she applauded. “You guys killed that. It was great.”

“They met sixteen years ago today,” said their server.

“Happy anniversary,” said the chef. “I hope enjoyed dinner.”

“It was fantastic,” Carrera said.

“Loved everything,” Slash added.

“We’ll have your desserts out right away,” said the chef. “Back to the kitchen, team.”

Everyone retreated inside, except the captain. Slash slid her gaze from him to Carrera, and a chill slid down her back.

“This is my dad, Paul Santini,” Carrera said. “Dad, this is Amanda Maynard.”

Slash felt like she got punched in the gut. Was this how he had her back?

Here we go.

“Hi,” Slash said.

Her dad extended his hand. She was surprised his was clammy.

“I hope you’re enjoying the cruise,” Paul said.

“It’s been great, Dad,” Carrera said.

“Congrats on the anniversary,” Paul said. “I should get back to the helm.”
