“So, Slash got you fired,” Carrera said. “What went down?”

“I worked for ALPHA. She did too, but she also got fired.”

What the fuck.

She was putting an entire organization at risk by her running her damn mouth.

He had to ask. “What’s ALPHA?”

Karen tossed back another mouthful. “It’s a top-secret organization.” Then, she drank down more.

“Not so secret if you’re telling me about it.”

Her cackle made him grimace. “Well, I can trust you.” She sat up straight. “I slouch.”

Move her away from ALPHA before someone hears her.

“Tell me about your boyfriend.”

“He’s great. Really, really great, but sometimes he promises me he’ll show up, then he can’t make it. And I get bummed.”

“What’s his name?”

“Greg.”

Jesus.

“What does he do?”

She finished the whiskey. “He’s a very busy businessman.” She chuckled. “That’s funny. Busy businessman. Say that fast three times.”

He said he liked chatty women, but he should have qualified that comment with chatty women of substance. Karen was babbling like a damn fool.

“Another drink?” he asked.

“I shouldn’t,” she replied. “Maybe we could get together for coffee sometime, you know, outside of here.”

He leaned close. “I’m a very bad man, Karen. You wouldn’t want to get caught up with me.”

Her breath hitched and she stared at his mouth. “I would kill to get caught up with you. You’re so sexy I could stare at you for hours and hours.”

He fisted her hair into a pony tail and tugged. “I’m evil. You should stay away from me.”

“Ohgod, yes,” Karen bleated.

He released his vice grip on her hair. “Make sure your boyfriend treats you right. You deserve it.”

She flicked her head. “You’re right. I do. I’m going to insist he come down here.”

“Take a night off and let him take you out somewhere fun.”

“Yeah, that’s a good idea.”

Carrera stood. “Thanks for your company. Always a pleasure.”

“Where are you going?”

“Into the back, to fuck.”
