As he passed the glass walls, he glared at them.

“Take me off speaker,” Luciano said.

“Yup,” Carrera said, phone to ear.

“He’s using you to come after me,” Luciano said. “Donotback down.”

The line went dead.

Carrera eyed both men across his desk. “Let’s get to work.”

AT THREE-THIRTY,Carrera entered the Organized Crime Division and stopped at reception. “I’m looking for Special Agent O’Reilly.”

The employee typed in her name. “She’s in a meeting. If you want to have a seat, I can let her know you’re here. What’s your name?”

“Deputy Director Santini,” he said.

The receptionist offered a tight smile before leaving his post. Down the hall he went, knocked on a conference room door. After entering, he exited seconds later.

“She asked if you can hold for five?” he asked Carrera.

“No problem.” Carrera moved away from reception, sent Luciano a text.

Are you having dinner with G-ma?

Yes

See you then

A few minutes later, Slash emerged, her laptop bag slung over her shoulder. As she made her way toward him, he couldn’t ignore her swagger. She carried herself with a confidence that was a total turn on, but the love in her eyes gave him hope for their future.

And then, he checked her out. From her tailored white pantsuit that hugged her curves to her open-toed stilettos, she was the epitome of professionalism… and she was all his.

“Deputy Director,” she said.

“Special Agent O’Reilly.”

As they rode the crowded elevator, the desire to pull her close and kiss her hello had him caressing her hand. Never before—not even when they were teens—was the pull this strong.

The elevator stopped on the next floor, the doors opened and Hirzog entered.

Carrera wasn’t intimidated and he wasn’t backing down. Hirzog was fucking with the wrong men. But to Z’s point, none of this would be happening if he’d taken the smaller office down the hall.

Hirzog narrowed his gaze at Carrera. “If I were you, I’d vacate that office.”

The thick tension in that small space had everyone staring at them.

Ah, for fuck’s sake.

“What’s the real problem, Peter?” Carrera asked.

The elevator stopped in the lobby, the doors spilled open, and everyone rushed out.

“You’re fucking with the wrong man, Santini. You, Develin, and that asshole Luciano should sleep with one eye open.”

Hirzog stepped off, and the doors closed. The elevator descended into the parking garage. In silence, he and Slash walked to his SUV. Once they drove out, on went their sunglasses, as the summer sun beat down on them.

“What’s Hirzog’s problem?” Slash asked.
