"I'm showing you the records because I want you to make an informed decision." He moves, and he moves fast, and the cold fingers close around my wrist before I've processed that the conversation has changed register. "You are the only variable we did not account for. His bond to you is real and it is strong and the Maw cannot access it the way it accesses everything else in him. So we are going to use it."

I pull. The grip doesn't give.

"The ritual circle responds to emotional resonance," he says, pulling me toward it. "Yours specifically. If you enter the circle, the bond between you acts as a conduit — the Maw can use his love for you as a channel to fully manifest. Not through him. Through you. Through the connection."

"That's not how the ritual works," I say, and I'm still pulling, and my free hand finds the wall and pushes off it hard and I get one step back before the grip tightens to something that is going to leave bruises.

"It's how this ritual works," he says. "The tablet you found is incomplete. I made sure of it, years ago."

He's lying. I know he's lying the way I know when a ledger's been doctored — something in the structure doesn't hold. The tablet's conditions were clear and self-contained: voluntary surrender, full understanding, inside the circle. Three conditions. Complete. If they were genuinely incomplete, he wouldn't need to drag me into the circle by force — he'd just letme try the ritual and watch it fail. He's telling me I need him because he needs me to believe it.

The circle blazes. The chamber shakes. Above me, through the stone, I can feel the battle cresting toward something irreversible and I think: I have to get out of here. I have to get to Sevareth. The ritual needs him present and willing and right now both of those things are further away than they've ever been.

I stop pulling against the grip and push toward him instead — he doesn't expect that, nobody expects that, it's the same trick I've been using since I was fifteen and a debt collector had my arm — and the half-second of his surprise is enough. I get my wrist free, I get the lamp from the floor, and I run for the stairs.

"The circle is already active!" he shouts behind me. "You cannot perform the ritual without me — you don't have the full sequence?—"

I don't stop. I don't look back. I go up the stairs and through the archive and through the corridor and I don't slow down until I'm through the estate's east door and into the street, into the smoke and the noise and the wrong-colored light of a city that is coming apart at the seams.

I have the ritual sequence in my memory. I have the three conditions. I don't have the full initiating text, which means Vaustren was telling at least a partial truth, which means I need to get to Sevareth and figure out the rest on the way.

I run toward the sound of the fighting.

SEVARETH

There is a version of me that is watching what I'm doing and cannot stop it.

I want to be clear about this, because clarity is the last thing I have and I am holding onto it like a rope over a drop. There is a version of me — small, exhausted, increasingly peripheral — that is watching the Maw work through my body and my magic with the specific horror of a body who has lost the steering and can still feel the vehicle moving. I can feel every choice the entity makes. I cannot override most of them anymore.

The battle is abstract now. It became abstract about an hour ago. What is not abstract is the shadow-work, which is very immediate and very specific and responds to things I'm not consciously directing. Someone moves toward me. The shadows respond. The Maw doesn't distinguish. The Maw has never distinguished. That was always the thing I was managing — the entity's fundamental inability to care about the difference between a threat and a person who happens to be moving in the wrong direction at the wrong moment.

I managed it for thirty years. I'm managing it less well now.

Draevik moves toward me and the shadows surge and I hear myself say stop and mean something different from what my body is doing and for one terrible second the gap between what I mean and what I'm doing is not closeable?—

Then I see his face. I see him see me. And somewhere in the ancient animal part of me that the Maw hasn't fully colonised, something recognises thirty years of standing at my back and refuses.

The shadows stop six inches from him.

"My lord," he says, very quietly. He doesn't move. He's bleeding from a cut above his eye and his armour is damaged at the shoulder and he is looking at me with the face of one who has been afraid before and knows how to stay useful in it. "You're still in there."

"Barely," I say.

"That's enough. That's all I need." He takes one slow step toward me. "She's coming. Just hold it one more time."

"I hurt the forward position."

"They'll recover."

"I nearly—" I stop. I see the shadows still writhing at the edges of my vision. "Draevik. If I lose the margin entirely before she gets here. Follow the plan."

"I know," he says. "And I won't need to. Hold on."

I'm not holding on.I want to tell him that but the Maw is inside the sentence before it reaches my mouth and what comes out isn't words. The battle sounds have receded to something distant and procedural, and what I'm aware of is the network — the abyssal infrastructure under the city, connected to the chamber below the archive, connected to the thirty-year pact, connected to the thing that is taking up more and more of the space inside me that used to be mine.

I understand, now, what it was building toward.
