I'm cataloging the third shelf when the door opens.

Every muscle in my body locks tight. The knife wound protests but I ignore it, ignore everything except the massive figure filling the doorway.

Orc. Male. Even bigger than the ones from my fractured memories, broad-shouldered and tall enough that he has to duck slightly to clear the frame. Deep green skin marked with scars that speak of violence survived, golden-amber eyes that sweep the room in a practiced assessment before landing on Lola.

His expression transforms. Softens into something I don't have words for, something that makes my chest hurt to witness because I've never seen anyone look at another person like that before.

"Lola." His voice rumbles like distant thunder, deeper than any human could manage but gentle in a way that doesn't match his appearance. "How is she?"

"Awake." Lola stands, moving toward him with zero hesitation. "Fever's breaking. The infection's responding well to Zurkar's treatment."

The orc's gaze shifts to me briefly, assessing but not invasive. He doesn't stare at my body the way slavers do, doesn't evaluate me like merchandise. Just... checks that I'm breathing and apparently still contained, then returns his full attention to Lola.

"Good." He reaches for her, one massive hand cupping her face with shocking tenderness. His thumb brushes across her cheekbone in a gesture so intimate I feel like I'm intruding just by witnessing it. "You've been here all night. You need rest."

"I'm fine, Kaelen." But she leans into his touch anyway, eyelids fluttering closed for just a moment. "Someone needs to monitor her. The wound could still turn septic if we're not careful."

Kaelen. I've gathered he's the one who found me in the canyon, who lifted me with impossible gentleness while I wastoo weak to fight. The pieces click together slowly, filtered through fever-fog and lingering distrust.

He's mated to her. The human. An orc warrior powerful enough to break bones with his bare hands chose a human woman as his mate, and he looks at her like she hung the stars in whatever sky this godforsaken world has.

That's... not possible. Orcs don't mate humans. They use them, trade them, work them to death in mines or fields or worse places. They don't look at them with reverence. They don't touch them like they're precious.

But Kaelen does. His entire body angles toward Lola like she's gravity itself, like proximity to her is the only thing keeping him grounded. And she responds the same way, leaning into his space with zero fear, her hand coming up to rest against his chest in casual affection.

I watch them and feel something crack open inside me. Something that might have been hope once, before it got beaten into scar tissue and cynicism.

"I'll take over." Another voice from the doorway, this one older. Zurkar appears beside Kaelen, pale green skin almost luminous in the amber light. His violet eyes find me immediately, sharp and assessing in a way that makes me want to hide under the furs. "Go rest, child. You've done well, but exhaustion serves no one."

Lola hesitates, glancing between me and the two orcs like she's weighing options. Finally she nods, squeezing Kaelen's arm once before heading toward the door. She pauses near the sleeping platform, meets my eyes directly.

"The cup is there when you want it," she says quietly. "Nobody's going to force you to do anything. Just... try to drink something, okay?"

Then she's gone, following Kaelen out into whatever lies beyond this chamber, leaving me alone with the shaman.

Zurkar moves through the room with practiced ease, checking supplies and adjusting containers with the efficiency of someone who's performed these tasks thousands of times. He doesn't approach the sleeping platform immediately, doesn't crowd my space or demand attention. Just works quietly, giving me time to adjust to his presence.

I use the opportunity to study him more carefully than I could before, when fear and pain made everything blur together. He's leaner than the warriors, built for precision rather than brute strength. White ritual paint marks his face in patterns that might mean something if I understood orc culture. Long white hair pulled back in a simple braid, revealing pointed ears pierced with small bone ornaments.

His hands move with absolute certainty as he grinds something in a stone mortar, crushing dried herbs into powder with rhythmic motions. The sound is almost soothing—consistent, predictable, safe in a way nothing else has been lately.

"You've been through considerable trauma." He speaks without looking at me, attention focused on his work. "Physical wounds we can treat. The rest..." He pauses, violet eyes flicking up briefly. "The rest takes time."

I don't respond. Don't know what he expects me to say to that.

"My name is Zurkar," he continues, unperturbed by my silence. "I am shaman of the Bone Warrior Clan. My role is to heal those who need healing, regardless of species or circumstance. You are under my protection while you recover. No one will harm you here."

Protection. The word tastes bitter even unspoken. I've heard variations of that promise before, always from people who wanted something in return. Protection in exchange forlabor. Protection in exchange for compliance. Protection that evaporated the moment it became inconvenient.

But Zurkar's tone doesn't carry that transactional quality. He states it like fact, like a law written into whatever code his people follow. Maybe he believes it. Maybe it's even true.

Doesn't mean I'm going to trust it.

The door opens again—I'm starting to hate that door, hate how exposed it makes me feel every time someone new might walk through. This time it's another orc, bigger even than Kaelen, with obsidian-black eyes that miss nothing and scars that tell stories of battles survived.

Power radiates from him like heat from forge-fire. Authority. The kind of presence that makes warriors straighten their spines and civilians drop their gazes. I recognize it instinctively because I've seen it in slavers and warlords and anyone who's learned to command through fear.

This one's different though. The power feels... earned rather than stolen. Chosen rather than seized.
