I wondered whether I was dreaming. Then he smiled in the adorably shy way I loved, and my heart answered with such sudden joy that I knew I was awake. He splashed through the stream with quick steps, reaching my side and dropping down beside me as though we were on one of our old exploring ventures.

He nodded towards my map. “You’re drawing the stream wrong—it should flow uphill.”

A laugh escaped me before I could stop it. His smile widened, and for an instant it felt as though the months between us had quietly faded away.

“I’ve been looking for you,” he murmured.

“So have I.” The words caught somewhere between laughter and tears.

His expression brightened as he pulled the leaf from his journal. “I knew I was getting close when I found this.”

He glanced towards the map that had fallen to my lap. “It appears you found your way home."

I looked around the beautiful valley before meeting his eyes again. “Almost, but the most important part of home is still missing.”

He searched my face with the same quiet concentration he’d once reserved for pressed leaves and forgotten trails, as though he were afraid to overlook the smallest sign of hope.

With an unsteady breath, I spoke the words that had first opened my heart to every feeling that had followed. “The moment I lost you, I discovered a new feeling that has stayed with me ever since our separation.”

Gabe grew very still, his eyes glistening with something so fragile I scarcely dared name it.

A shy smile tugged at my lips as I met his gaze. “I find myself looking for you every morning. When I finish a map, you’re the first person I want to show. Whenever I discover somewhere beautiful, my first thought is wondering what you’ll think of it. I still listen for your footsteps on the stairs, and I still miss you whenever you’re not in the same room.”

The confession left me feeling vulnerable, each sentence uncovering another piece of the heart I’d spent years trying to bury.

Silence settled gently between us once more, yet this time it held no uncertainty. It felt full, as though neither of us wished to rush the moment. His gaze lingered upon mine, quiet and searching, and the smile that slowly answered mine was small enough to be almost reverent.

In that exchange, I knew that even though I was still learning how to read the map of his heart, I now recognized where it was leading, a journey we would spend the remainder of our lives exploring.

I closed the remaining distance between us. His hands found mine before I reached him, gently wrapping around them as though he still feared I might disappear. I looked into the quiet kindness that had first taught my heart how to hope again, then rose onto my toes and kissed him.

It wasn’t our first kiss, yet in many ways, it felt like our first beginning.

There was no magic this time. No enchanted recipe shimmered to life. No bargain waited to demand another sacrifice. There was only the warmth of his hands around mine, the steady beat of his heart beneath my fingertips, and the quiet certainty that love had never belonged to the spell—it had belonged to us.

And after every road either of us had wandered, every path that had nearly brought us together, and every choice that had finally led us here…we had found one another again, and together we would remain.

When we finally drew apart, Gabe rested his forehead against mine, smiling the same quiet smile that had first welcomed me into the forest. “I love you,” he murmured.

The words settled gently into my heart, finding a place that had always been waiting for them. “I love you, too.” This time, the words carried every feeling I had once feared was lost forever.

I slipped my hand into his. He intertwined his fingers with mine, and together we turned towards the path leading back to the bakery. We no longer needed maps to find where we belonged—we were already walking home.

EPILOGUE

Morning sunlight streamed through the kitchen windows, spilling across the worn wooden countertops as I shaped another batch of lemon scones and turning drifting flour into tiny flecks of gold that Nutmeg playfully chased.

The familiar fragrance of butter and fresh lemon zest filled the bakery, mingling with the comforting scent of freshly baked bread and the kettle quietly steaming upon the stove. There was no enchanted sugar waiting upon the shelves, no ancient recipe demanding another sacrifice. Only simple ingredients transformed through patience, care, and love into something meant to be shared.

The recipe had become one of my favorites—not because it held any magic, but because every time I made it, I remembered the shy hunter who had once sat at my table, completely unaware that a few crumbs upon his chin and his unabashed delight over a simple scone had begun awakening a heart I believed was lost forever.

I smiled to myself as I brushed cream across the tops of the scones I had just placed upon the cooling rack. Even after allthese years, I could still remember the wonder lighting Gabe’s face as he took that very first bite.

Behind me, the familiar rhythm of footsteps crossed the bakery floor. Before I could turn, warm arms slipped gently around my waist. “Lemon scones?” my husband murmured, his lips brushing my hair.

I leaned comfortably back against his chest. “Your favorite.”

Even with the bakery bustling from morning until evening, I could never quite resist setting aside time each week to bake them just for him. It had become our quiet tradition to enjoy them over strawberry cream tea every Sunday afternoon, a gentle remembrance of the first tea we had ever shared.
