I repeated the pattern.

Marlowe scrambled upright, looking between us.

Noah shut his eye.

His breathing changed.

“Is that the sound?” I asked.

He did not answer.

“Noah?”

His hand caught my shirt.

“Again.”

I gave the signal a third time.

A tear slipped from beneath his closed eyelid.

I turned carefully toward him.

“Tell me what’s happening.”

“I know that sound.”

“You remember it?”

“No.”

The denial came out angry.

“I don’t remember it. I know it.”

His fist tightened.

“It means you.”

My heart lurched.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

He opened his eye.

The expression in it nearly destroyed me.

“When I hear it, I turn toward you.”

I could not speak.

Frustration twisted his face.

“There’s no picture. I don’t see the yard. I don’t see you calling for me. There’s nothing I can describe.”
