“You hate what she chose. Some part of you still loves the mother you needed her to be.”
Tears reached his lashes.
“That’s worse.”

He lowered his forehead to my shoulder.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“Bringing this into dinner.”
“This is your home. You can bring anything here.”
A weak laugh escaped him.
“You say dangerous things.”
“I own cleaning supplies.”
He moved closer.
“We made our own family.”
“We did.”
“Leah. The girls.”
“Caleb. Owen.”
“Marlowe.”
The dog lifted his head at the sound of his name.
“And now Elias?”
I smiled faintly.
“That may be premature.”
