The smile that followed was quiet and unguarded.

A phone rang in the office.

Reid ignored it for two rings.

On the third, he kissed my temple and went to answer.

Owen walked past carrying the label printer.

“You two finished making the electrical trade unbearably romantic?”

“No.”

“Please do. Some of us are trying to retain breakfast.”

I laughed.

From the office, Reid called my name.

His tone had changed.

I took the cane and walked in.

He held the receiver against his chest.

“It’s the injury settlement administrator.”

“For the yard?”

“For you.”

My good mood faded.

I sat in the chair beside his desk and accepted the phone.

“This is Noah Bennett.”

The woman introduced herself as Felicity Harrow. I remembered the name faintly from paperwork but not her voice.

She spoke quickly.
