He had probably been checking since the moment he woke.
“The rapid test may not post until evening,” I said.
“I know.”
“You’re anxious.”
“No.”
I waited.
He frowned.
“Yes.”
“About what?”
His gaze moved through the glass wall toward Caleb and Owen.
“Could I have contracted something from the hospital?”
“Through the transfusions?”
“Yes.”
“Blood is screened.”
“No system is perfect.”
“No.”
His thumb traced the edge of his phone.
“What else?” I asked.
“What makes you think there’s more?”
“You look guilty, and I know you haven’t done anything.”
He turned the phone over in his palm.
“I searched online.”
“For what?”
“Amnesia and undiscovered medical conditions.”
“That sounds designed to end badly.”
“It became much worse.”
“What did you find?”
“A man who woke after surgery and learned he had two families.”
I stared at him.
“One in Nevada,” he continued. “One in Idaho.”
