“No. Feeding and housing a child does not create a debt.”

His jaw hardened.

“You stopped being family when every scrap of affection came with conditions.”

Her words struck fast and sharp.

The color drained from Noah’s face, but he did not retreat.

“I have a family.”

He looked through the office glass.

Caleb and Owen had gone still in the break room.

Then he looked at me.

“My family is made of the people who stayed when I had nothing useful to give them.”

My chest tightened painfully.

“You do not get to insult them and still claim the title of mother.”

Diane answered.

Noah’s mouth curved without humor.

“Reid did not turn me against you. You managed that before I ever knew his name.”

He breathed.

“This is the last time we speak. If you come here again, the police will be called. If you phone again, Marian will document it. If you contact my doctors, my bank, or anyone involved in the settlement, our attorney will respond.”

Her shouting became loud enough to distort through the receiver.

Something in Noah’s expression shifted.

Not collapse.

Release.

“I don’t hate you,” he said quietly. “I’m simply finished allowing you to hurt me.”

He ended the call.

The office fell silent.

Noah set the receiver in its cradle with extraordinary care.

He stared at it.

I watched his breathing.

“Color?”

He understood the question at once.

“Amber.”
