“Vice… What does already in place mean?”

“It means somebody’s gonna be downstairs and somebody’s gonna be on your floor.”

Her eyebrows went up. “I don’t need somebody standing outside my door all night.”

“They won’t be standing outside your door.”

“Oh…”

“They’ll be down the hall.” She glared at me like I was crazy. “What?”

“You really think that makes it better?”

“Yeah.”

“How?”

“You won’t see them.”

The elevator doors opened before she could answer, and I stepped inside. Milan followed, shaking her head as the doors closed behind us.

She leaned against the wall and closed her eyes for a second. Up close, I could see how tired she really was. She’d worked all night, gone home expecting to sleep and walked into a threat instead. I could understand why she didn’t want strangers following her around, but right now, what she wanted wasn’t at the top of my list.

The elevator stopped on the top floor, and I led her down the hallway toward the suite. I unlocked the door and stepped inside first, checking the rooms before she could say anything.

“I’m pretty sure your security has already checked this room,” she fussed from behind me.

“Oh, I know that, but I’m checking again.”

She dropped her bag near the couch. “Of course you are…”

The suite had everything she needed for the night. Bedroom, bathroom, living room and a small kitchen. Milan walked through slowly before stopping near the large bay windows.

“This is too much… This is damn near an apartment.”

“You complaining about having space now?”

“No. I’m saying I didn’t need all this.” She turned around and looked at me. “How much is this costing?”

“Nothing.”

“Vice.”

“What?”

“I’m not staying here for free.”

“You are tonight.”

“I can pay for my own room.”

“I know can.”

“Then let me.”

“No.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Why?”
