“Fine,” Jenners snapped.
They went to head upstairs, but Jenners was shoved backwards. He flew into an armchair and landed with a bang. Shocked, Jenners stared at the door.
“I’ll take a cross and blessing,” he muttered.
Yeah, somehow I thought he might.
Ghoul
Jeremiah was amping up. I could sense him strongly. Angela and the two cops’ fear was overloading him. There was nothing I could do to stop him.
“Jeremiah,” I called and felt his attention turn to me. “None of us mean you harm.”
A cackle of dark laughter burst throughout the inn.
“Harm. Not.”
“Yeah, we don’t want to.”
“I. Do.”
“That’s unfair, as we had nothing to do with your murder.”
“Ignored.”
“No. You weren’t ignored; however, nobody knew you were here. They do now; we can acknowledge your ghost and tell everyone what Kingsmill did to you. I’m sure Angela will rename his room now she knows how vile he was. She can call it after you,” I said calmly. Inside, I was shaking.
I’d sensed dark spirits and demons before, but what was coming off of Jeremiah was shocking. The sheer desperation not to be ignored for another three hundred years was suffocating. Alongside that was sheer, unadulterated anger. Jeremiah waspissedat being ignored for centuries. There was also pain and a strong sense of betrayal. And it was feeding him alongside our own emotions.
“Shut. Up.”Jeremiah bit out.
“I want to talk.”
“I don’t.”
“You’re scaring people, innocents. Is that what you want?”
I sensed violence before Jeremiah acted, and he lashed out, sending me flying. I crashed into Coffee, who slammed to the floor with me.
“Get off me, you fat bastard,” Coffee complained, shoving at me.
“How’s he getting in? We salted the room,” Sunny demanded.
“He’s not. Jeremiah is doing this from outside the room. If we didn’t have the salt…” I let my voice trail off as I climbed up off of Coffee.
“Christ, and he’s this strong?” Jack demanded.
“You need to get us out,” Jenner ordered.
I gave him a dark look. “What do you think we’re trying to do? Thereisa pregnant woman here.”
Jenner glanced at Callie before subsiding.
My point made, I turned to Haunt. “Any ideas?”
“No.”
