“My father was an intelligent man.” My mouth felt suddenly dry. “He wouldn’t knowingly take medications that when combined are deemed unsafe.”

“This is a serious allegation, Ms. Hubbard.”

“I’m aware. Is this phone call enough for you to investigate or do I need to make a statement?”

“I’ll take your concern to our captain and let you know next week.”

The breakfast buffet churned in my stomach. “Thank you, Detective Oldson. I look forward to hearing from you.”

I let out a long breath as I hit the red icon, uncertainty washing over me. I couldn’t go back and erase the call.

What the fuck have I done?

How will I face Daphne on the plane ride home?

Is my suspicion based on the facts or because Daphne threatened my ownership of the Coopers?

I looked upward. “Dad, I’m sorry if I’m wrong. However, I can’t live with myself if I’m right and I didn’t pursue this.”

“This is prime-time television,” Coach Tilson said before the game. “This is where the Coopers belong. Our season isn’t ending tonight. Let’s make Lexington proud. We’re going to be on prime time from now until the Super Bowl. Do you agree?”

“We agree,” the team chanted.

“Do you agree?”

“We agree.” Our reply echoed in the locker room.

“Who is going to win?” he asked.

“The Coopers,” we yelled.

“Who?”

“The Coopers.”

“You’re the Coopers,” Tilson screamed. “You’ve got this.”

“We’ve got this, Coach.”

The entry onto the field was less dramatic for the visiting team. There was no tunnel fog or flashing lights. Yet high above in NRG Stadium were pockets of amber who cheered as we were announced. The fireworks were reserved for the home team.

The stadium erupted in explosives and cheers as the Texans came onto the field.

The usual progression occurred.

The Texans won the coin flip and chose to defer.

I slapped Troy’s shoulder pads. “You’ve got this.”

His dark stare showed the intensity in his mindset.

“Front row to greatness,” I said.
