“Phenomenal.”

I chuckle.

“What about you? What did you do all week?” She asks.

“Read tons of books. Played music. Ate snack after snack. Learned to cook.” I deliver the lie with confidence.

Salvario told me he constantly loops the live security feed from inside. Jacob can block others from seeing it, but he can always see it himself, and manipulating that feed would blind him too. So I’m confident. No one knows about him.

Ava appears in the kitchen. “Miss, someone’s calling for you outside.”

I nod and head out.

In front of the main door, a cluster of guards stands around a cage. Inside is a husky.

Bruno.

The head guard steps forward. “Someone left it at the gate with a note. Said it’s for you. We ran the usual checks, it’s clean. Master wants to know what you’d like done with it.”

“Let him out. I’ll keep him.” I move toward the cage.

He opens the cage with a remote. Bruno bolts out, straight toward me. The sudden charge puts every guard on high alert.

I chuckle and drop to the ground, letting him have his way with me. He licks every inch of my face, jumps all over me. Such an aggressive boy. I grab his face with equal aggression and kiss him all over.

Rosie appears behind me. Bruno freezes, stares at her, then barks. She barks back, growling. She’s still much smaller than him, but my girl has fire inside her.

“No, Rosie. He’s your big brother.”

She nudges closer to me. Bruno growls. I hug him.

“No, Bruno. Aren’t you my good boy?”

It doesn’t stop the low growl rumbling in his chest, aimed right at my poor Rosie. The next second, she proves she’s not so poor—launching an attack on Bruno.

My soul nearly leaves my body when Bruno attacks back. She falls to the ground. I yelp, almost crying.

I rush toward her, but before I reach her, she’s back on her paws, charging at him again. She definitely has a death wish.

This time, Bruno doesn’t fight back. He just moves, dodging her attacks.

I stand to the side, watching. I think this is their way of figuringout who’ll be the alpha.

Chapter 49

Elowen

A month later.

I drag my stiff body down to the dining room, hoping to put some food in my stomach. Every muscle aches, sore from all the dancing I’ve done these past few days. After all, it was Avi’s wedding. I could be dying, but I wouldn’t miss the chance to dance my soul out.

She’s gone now, off to Iceland for her honeymoon. The elders all left yesterday, right after she did. I’ll stay here a few more days. Rosie and Bruno are loving their time here, and after finding out Lyn was shot—and none of us knew—I feel compelled to stay close to her. She’s recovered, but a near-death experience like that... it’s traumatizing.

I slump into the chair beside Lyn.

“Where’s Leo? And my babies?” I ask.

“Matleon got a call. Your babies are in the forest.”
