Seren stumbles outof the Gateway into wind sharp enough to steal breath from her lungs. The cold punches straight through leather and bone, stealing not just breath but balance. Her chest locks for a heartbeat too long, lungs refusing to obey, and panic flares sharp and wild before she forces the air back in.
The ground beneath her boots is slick with salt, stone polished smooth by centuries of ocean violence in some places, jagged with persistent shards that won’t submit to the ocean’s fury in others. The sea below is not blue, not even gray—but black, churning and endless, slamming itself against the cliffs with the guttural groan of a starving beast.
She steadies herself, jaw tight, fingers flexing at her sides.
Stormlight fractures the sky—an objection to her presence.
Lightning rips open the clouds in jagged tears, illuminating towering cliffs riddled with caverns and split by ancient fault lines. The craggy rocks rise like broken teeth from the water, hollowed and scarred, their faces eaten away by wind and wave. The air tastes of iron and brine and something older. Something ancient.Something familiar.
This place is not wounded.
It is wild.
Untouched by a world that would seek to make it a commodity. To strip it of its rawness and mold it into something gleaming for the sake of coin. Just like the rest of the realms—a spectacle.
The storm does not rage blindly. It circles. Grieves. Returns again and again, as though the sky itself cannot let go of what pains it. Waves climb the cliffs like grasping hands, retreating only to strike harder, and Seren feels—deep in her bones—that the sea is reaching for something.
For her.
No—throughher.
She swallows, heart hammering.
This is not Virellin. Not anywhere meant to welcome.
What in the fucking Stars is this place?
Wind howls through a yawning cavern ahead, the sound hollow and wrong—like breath passing through a ribcage. Shapes hang at the cave mouth, swaying gently, their silhouettes sharp against the lightning’s glare.
Bones.
Dozens of them.
Not sun-bleached and dry. These bones are stripped bare by the unrelenting crash of furious seas. Skeletons strung high against the stone, their frames knotted in place, ribs glimmering when the storm breaks overhead. The wind whistles through them, producing a low, keening hum—neither voice nor silence.
A warning.
Seren’s spine straightens.
Fear coils tight in her gut, cold and real and unignorable. But beneath it, something hotter sparks—resolve burning where obedience once lived. She has not come seeking sanctuary. She has not come begging for lineage to mean something, nor for a crown to be placed atop her head.
She came because she chose to.
Because she fuckingwantedto.
Because turning back would mean becoming exactly what everyone thinks she will become.
Seren Calvatere squares her shoulders and steps forward, into the wind, into the watching dark—toward the cavern that calls to her like destiny’s drumbeat.
Her boots slip on the slick rocks, but it doesn’t deter her. She allows herself to stumble, to fall, to rise again, but she will not be pushed from what calls her.Not today.
The ocean dumps violent waves against the rocks, spraying her with such force she loses her feet beneath herself, lurching forward and catching herself on her palms. She’s not stupid enough to believe her untrained muscles can withstand the force of the merciless seas here—so she crawls.
Each knee grinds into stone, impact reverberating straight through bone, a deep, nauseating ache that feels less like pain and more like being slowly ground down.
Steadying herself on hands and knees, she sets her shoulders, her jaw. And she drags her knees across broken rock, battling the seas as if they wage wars against intruders. The storm circles with more ferocity overhead, splicing through the gray skies in ruthless threats.
Fuck.
