The noise.
It all fades into something that no longer demands her attention. In its place, there is only stillness.
She thinks of him.
Of Kael.
Of the way he looked at her before everything broke.
Of the way he said her name through the tether.
Somewhere beyond the smoke and ruin, darkness still moves through the city like a living thing. Destroying. Consuming. Hunting. And for the first time, Elyssara wonders if death might be the only thing capable of stopping him. Of returning him to her in the After.
She thinks of Seren. Of Ronyn. Of the people who chose her, who believed in something she had not yet become.
She thinks of the girl she had been, running through the slums, fighting for scraps of a life she did not understand.
And for the first time, she feels no resistance. No need to claw her way forward. No need to survive at any cost. Only a quiet, aching acceptance.
This is where she stops fighting destiny.
This is where she kneels to the Stars.
This is where it ends.
The thought settles gently. Not defeat. Not failure. An ending.Completion.
And maybe that is mercy too.
For the world.
For Kael.
Nyrielle’s power surges.
Elyssara opens her eyes.
She does not reach for her magic.
She does not step back.
She simply stands.
And waits.
CHAPTER FIFTY-SEVEN
The oldest wounds still shape the sky
Yet even broken things may fly
Lara does not arrive subtly. She lands like a force—certain, decisive. The Gateway tears open in the bowels of The Underbelly with a sharp distortion of air and light, the space folding in on itself before releasing her into it. Heat hits her first, thick and damp, clinging to her skin. Then the smell—iron and rot and something chemical that burns at the back of her throat.
The tunnels are packed in every direction.
Bodies pressed shoulder-to-shoulder, faces slick with sweat and fear, voices overlapping in a low, constant murmur that borders on panic. People clutch at one another, at the walls, at anything that might anchor them as the world above them tears itself apart.
Nobles lean away from slummers. Slummers sneer at nobles. There is no peace here. Only survival.
