But Elyssara was forged by survival.
There is a difference.
By the time they reach the steps of Virellin Castle, still standing proud and untouched, thousands have gathered behind them.
The six remaining dragons settle across the fractured towers overhead, vast and ancient against the lightening sky, their wings folding slowly as they watch the kingdom below. Smoke curls through the air around them, softening the edges of ruin into something almost sacred.
Kael looks across the people gathered before the castle and understands with absolute certainty that the world cannot return to what it was. Not after this. Not after everything they survived to reach this moment.
He steps forward before doubt can touch him. And the city stills.
Without preamble, Kael says, “I abdicate the throne of Zerynthia.” His voice carries across the shattered castle grounds.
The certainty settles through him with surprising ease. The crown had never fit comfortably upon his shoulders. It had always belonged somewhere else.
A murmur moves through the crowd, but he continues before it can rise into anything louder.
“I was never meant to lead the world that comes after this.”
And he does not say aloud what he knows in his bones:he does not want to without Teddy.
His gaze finds Elyssara beside him, steady and unwavering.
“But she is.”
He reaches for her hand and places it carefully in front of the gathered people, not as a possession claimed, but as a truth finally spoken aloud.
“The throne of a united Aevryn belongs to Elyssara Dawnmere.”
Silence follows.
Then the city erupts.
Not into chaos; into relief. Grief. Hope. The sound crashes through the castle grounds like a wave breaking against stone as the people of Virellin witness the end of one world and the beginning of another.
The Known Realms remade.
Elyssara steps forward slowly, light gathering softly beneath her skin as dawn spills fully across the horizon behind her.
“There will be no more conscription,” she says, and the crowd quiets immediately. “No more children stolen from their homes in the name of power. No more kingdoms divided by fear. No more systems built on the suffering of the many to preserve the comfort of the few.”
Her gaze sweeps across the people standing before her.
“We were taught that cruelty was necessary for survival.”
The wind shifts through the broken city.
“We were lied to.”
The words settle over Virellin with the weight of a prophecy fulfilled.
The Lightborne shall rise, and truth shall ignite.
The prophecy echoes through Kael’s mind with startling clarity.
“We rebuild together,” Elyssara says, nodding at Kael like she understands. “Not as separate kingdoms. Not as rulers and subjects. Not as Starborn and Earthbound. Not as Dravara and Zerynthia. As one kingdom.”
The crowd erupts again, eyes fixed on Elyssara. Their Queen.
