I go.

She takes my hand. Pulls me down to sit beside her. The bed shifts under our weight. Her fingers lace through mine, warm against cool.

“When this is over,” she says. “I want you to take me somewhere with no wards.”

“That place doesn’t exist.”

“Then I’ll build it.” She looks at me. The dry edge, the one I married, the one that hides the soft thing underneath that she’sstopped hiding as often as she used to. “Or you’ll build it. You’re better with your hands.”

The surge hits her between one breath and the next.

I feel it through the bond, the flare of want that has run through this whole pregnancy, the same surge that took me by the collar in a conference room and emptied a dinner table, and the pattern would predict the laugh, the collar-grab, the comedy of the most controlled man alive losing his composure while his wife drags him out of a room.

Neither of us laughs.

The room is dark. The shutters are open. The maps are packed and the boots are by the door and the war is twelve hours away. The gravity of a last night is in everything, and neither of us knows whether the morning brings ending or beginning, and the uncertainty is not suspense but surrender.

She looks at me. I look at her. The surge is there, hot and immediate and running through the bond from her body into mine, and what’s underneath it isn’t the bravado of a woman who knows she’ll get what she wants. It’s a woman who knows this might be the last time, and the want and the grief are the same feeling, and the comedy drains out of the gesture and leaves something rawer in its place.

She puts her hand on my face. The direct eye contact, the absolute refusal to let me look anywhere except at her when she’s about to say something she needs me to hear in my bones.

“Stay with me tonight,” she says. A request, not a demand. The most she’s ever asked of me since the night she said my name and the mark wrote itself into both of us.

I turn my face into her palm. Her fingers are warm. My skin is cool.

“Always,” I say. She asked me to stay, and the asking is simple, and the simplicity of it undoes me more than any elaboraterequest could, because the woman who dragged me out of conference rooms by my collar and emptied dinner tables with her wanting is asking me, tonight, to be here. Just here. In this room, in this bed, with her. No agenda. No urgency. Just presence.

The room goesdark and warm and the marks blaze crimson and the night before the war becomes the night we take from it.

Worship was the last time. This is defiance.

She stands at the window. The shutters are open and the dark outside is the dark that holds the estate, and somewhere in that dark a man is waiting for us, and she is looking at the place where we’re going and she is not afraid of it, or she is afraid of it and the fear is not the thing that governs her. Both read the same from behind.

I cross the room. I fit my chest to her spine, the old position, the one our bodies find when both of us stop thinking, and my mouth finds the nape of her neck where her hair is pulled aside, and she exhales and her head drops back against my shoulder and the mark over her heart flares at the contact.

My hands move. Not slow. Not the worship pace from the last time. My palms slide up over her stomach, the swell of her hard and warm under my hands, and then higher, my thumbs tracing the underside of her breasts through the thin fabric, and her breath catches and her hips press back against me and the friction sends a pulse that hits us both.

I pull the shirt over her head. My mouth goes to her shoulder. The skin is burning under my lips and the heat is familiar and the last-night gravity underneath it is not, and what I feel when I touch her tonight is every night we’ve had compacted into the knowledge that the count might stop, and the knowledge makesme hold harder and the holding makes her turn her head and find my mouth over her shoulder and the angle of the kiss is wrong for comfort and right for everything else.

My hand slides down. Over the curve of her stomach, past it, between her thighs, and when my fingers find her she’s already wet and the sound she makes against my mouth goes through me like current. I stroke her with two fingers, slow, firm, pressing against the place that makes her breath stutter, and she reaches back and grips my hip and pulls me tighter against her and the wanting between us is a two-way flood, hers pouring into mine and mine into hers.

The shadows don’t pour off me tonight. They don’t rise or slide or fall. They darken the glass in front of us until the window becomes a mirror, until I can see both of us in it, her body against mine, the crimson glow of the marks reflected back, two people lit red in the dark. The shadows made us a mirror on purpose and I watch myself touch her in the reflection while the estate sits in the dark behind the glass, and the defiance of it burns hotter than the wanting.

My fingers press harder. She gasps, her hips rolling against my hand, and I feel her climbing, the urgency spiking, and I don’t let her crest. I slow. I hold her at the edge while my other hand grips her hip and my mouth traces the line of her neck, and the restraint costs me as much as it costs her because I can feel what I’m doing to her in my own body, the strain transfer running the sensation between us until my fingers shake with what she’s feeling.

“Don’t you dare stop,” she says. The voice she uses when she’s past negotiation.

I don’t stop. I give her what she’s asking for, my fingers moving fast and precise, and the peak takes her in a rush I feel in my own chest, and the cry she makes echoes off the glass, and the shadows in the window ripple with it.

She turns in my arms. The turn is fast, decisive, a woman choosing to face me instead of the dark, and her mouth is on mine before the turn finishes, fierce, her hands pulling at my belt, my shirt already gone though I don’t remember losing it. She backs me toward the bed and the backs of my knees hit the mattress and I go down and she follows.

She doesn’t climb on top. She pulls me over her. The gravity is different tonight. She wants my weight. She wants the full measure of me pressed against her, cool on hot, the contact total, and when I settle over her, careful of the swell, she hooks her leg around my hip and pulls me closer and the careful stops mattering.

I push into her and the sound she makes is raw. A sound with the war in it, the fear and the want fused into one thing that has no name. I still, deep, my forehead against hers, and her hands grip my arms and her eyes find mine and neither of us breathes.

Her eyes hold mine. No command needed. Neither of us has ever closed our eyes for this, and tonight the looking is its own language, and the language says everything the war won’t let us put into words.

I move. Hard. Present. Every stroke a statement that we are here and alive and the war doesn’t get this. The bond carries the sensation in both directions and the doubling makes the room blur, her pleasure arriving in my body as mine arrives in hers, the feedback climbing without ceiling. Her legs lock around me. Her hands grip my back, not nails scoring but palms flat, holding on, the grip of someone who is not trying to leave marks but trying to keep the person she’s holding from being taken.
