“I’ve scan-read it a few times and now I’m going to read more,” I whisper. “It’s helping me see things more clearly, even if I don’t remember everything yet.”

“But your memory is coming back.”

I nod as I think about my laptop sitting on the desk. “There’s a problem with my computer, too. I don’t remember how to get into it.”

“What do you mean?” Milly whispers. “Just turn it on.”

“I can’t remember the password.”

Milly laughs, tossing her hair over her shoulder. “Nobody uses passwords anymore. Turn it on. You’ll have set up a Face or Fingerprint ID. One will work. Just look at the screen. If that doesn’t open it up, then press your fingerprint over the mouse pad.”

“Really?”

“Trust me. You were always paranoid about security, you’ll have set it up. You hated remembering passwords.”

“Can you help me? Just to get into it.”

“Come on. Enzo will be fine.” She takes my hand and we dash up the staircase.

In my room, I open the laptop and press the power button. Milly crouches beside me as the screen lights up, casting a blue glow across our faces.

I position myself in front of the camera, holding still as the screen scans my face, but nothing happens.

“Try your finger,” Milly suggests, pointing to the small square on the right side of the mouse pad.

I press my index finger against it, and to my surprise, the screen unlocks immediately.

“See? Told you.” Milly peers at the screen. “What are you looking for, anyway?”

My heart races as I stare at the apps. “I’m not sure. Anything that might help me remember why someone ran me over.”

“Is that wise?”

“I need to know before everyone knows my memory is returning.”

“Have you told anyone else?”

“Caleb knows a little.” She purses her lips, but before she can say anything, I say, “I trust him.”

“Okay, but we need to have a talk about this. I’ll speak to you when Enzo leaves. For now, click the different apps. You’ll get the hang of it, but do nothing stupid. I will come and help you when I get rid of Enzo.”

What I don’t tell her is that I’m desperate to check the Pampered Princess website I found mentioned in my diary. Not only the website, but I think I am being blackmailed, and somehow it is connected to someone on the website.

“Want me to help you look now?” Milly asks.

“No!” I say too quickly. “I mean, I think I need to do this myself. It might trigger more memories if I discover things on my own.”

She looks slightly hurt, but nods. “Okay, I get it. Just let me know if you find anything interesting. Open an incognito browser if you want nothing logged.”

“Incognito?”

“Here, let me.” Milly hovers over three dots and a new menu appears. She clicks on the incognito tab. “Unless you log in, nobody knows that you’re on whatever website you go on.”

“Thanks.”

“Be careful. Call me if something upsets you. And let me know if you find out anything important,” Milly says, squeezing my hand.

“I will,” I promise, planning to do no such thing.
