“I’ve had enough taken from me as it is,” I said firmly.“I’m not going to cower and allow Tray to think he has the upper hand.My house is where I’m most comfortable, so that’s where I want to go.”

“They literally shot up your house, Jo.You don’t think they’ll come back to finish the job?”

I slowly turned my head and looked at him before answering.

“Not if I finish it first.”

Jo was inside gettingthings put away after we got back from the grocery store, while I waited outside with Keith to give him the keys to the truck he had left for us.One of his guys had driven my truck back to Nowhere so they could ensure no one was following it.While I loved the truck he loaned me, I missed my truck even more.

I leaned against the wall, my head tipped up as the sun warmed my face.I wanted to close my eyes and pretend that everything was fine and that this was just a typical day, but I couldn’t push past the gnawing thought that danger could be just a few steps away.

Tires crunched the snow as Keith drove up, parking my truck in Jo’s driveway.I pushed off the wall and walked over to him as I retrieved the keys from my pocket.

“It’s fucking cold,” he muttered as we traded keys and shoved our hands back in our pockets to try to keep warm.

“I can’t wait for summer.”

“Is she inside?”he asked, nodding to the front door that had been replaced while we were gone.My guess was that Axel had been by to take care of it, but I wasn’t sure.

“Yeah. We went grocery shopping, so she’s putting stuff away and deciding what she wants for dinner.”

“Sounds like Jo.”

I nodded because he was right. This was typical Jo behavior. That girl didn’t have a single worry in her mind now that she’d decided she would kill Tray before he could kill her. Most people would think someone was bluffing if they said something like that, but I knew Jo didn’t bluff—especially when it came to Tray.

“I have a few guys watching the house, but call if you need anything,” Keith said before climbing into the other truck.I tipped my head in agreement, then headed back inside, where it was warm.

“How does steak and baked potatoes sound for dinner?”Jo asked as I locked the door behind me and hung up my jacket.

“Sounds great. What do you need help with?”

I walked into the kitchen, taking slow, steady breaths to keep myself from losing it.While she was continuing on as if nothing was wrong, I couldn’t help but obsess over all of the things that could go wrong at any second.
