Luther
Four nights after Grayson added Josie’s question to his log, Nicholas and Lorenzo take over my basement study. Nicholas has his laptop open beside a stack of ledgers pulled from Vice & Virtue storage, while Lorenzo tapes printed flowcharts across the chalkboard. I stand near the desk with a mug of coffee cooling in my hand and watch the same names appear across records that should have nothing to do with one another.
“The shell companies aren’t the important part,” Lorenzo says. “It’s the people administering them. The same trustees, registered agents, and management firms keep appearing across different layers.”
Nicholas turns the laptop so I can see the names highlighted in several documents. The same administrative firms appear in Ward’s old property accounts, in charities that once fundedHearthstone placements, and in two entities now connected to Victor and Dorian’s original acquisition filings.
“Most of these companies went dormant after Ward’s arrest,” Nicholas says. “Someone began filing through them again last year.”
Lorenzo taps one of the printed charts. “Our best guess is that Victor and Dorian found the old network while searching for leverage against Keller Industries. They’re using structures Ward already had in place because the ownership is difficult to trace and most of the entities still look legitimate on paper.”
I set my mug down and move closer to the board. One line runs from a property trust used during Hearthstone’s expansion to a management company now attached to Dorian’s revised original acquisition filings. Another charity appears in the records Nicholas recovered from Vice & Virtue and in the donor list Blossom gave him while they were rebuilding Ember House’s funding plan.
The explanation fits what we know about Ward. He used police access, shell charities, and people willing to hide money for him. If Victor found what remained after the arrests, he would have inherited a system already designed to conceal where the funds came from and what they purchased.
“I need to call Thane,” I say. “I need to know what the federal investigation found before Ward’s arrest scattered the records.”
Lorenzo removes the tape from his fingers and looks toward me. “Before you do, bring the others down. Thane may tell us this has nothing to do with Ward, or he may reopen something Luca believed was finished. Either way, this reaches beyond Keller Industries.”
I look at the records spread across my desk. The evidence involves Blake’s company, Luca’s history, and the sanctuary Grayson and Maceo have both begun helping protect. There is no version of the call that belongs to me alone.
“I’ll get them.”
Blake comes downstairs beside Maceo, moving carefully but without accepting the arm Maceo keeps near him. When they reach the study, Blake passes Maceo his glasses while he settles onto the sofa, and Maceo cleans one lens with the edge of his shirt before returning them. Blake catches his wrist and kisses the inside of it before letting him take the chair beside him.
Grayson follows with Luca, carrying the blanket they took upstairs after putting the children to bed. He spreads it across the back of the sofa before sitting beside Luca. A moment later, Luca pulls one corner over his legs and tucks the other against Grayson’s thigh.
I wait until all four of them are settled, then remain near the desk rather than placing myself between them and the evidence.
“Nicholas and Lorenzo found the same entities in two different sets of records,” I say. “Several trusts and administrative firms tied to Ward’s old operation are now appearing around Victor and Dorian’s acquisition attempt. Right now, the most likely explanation is that they found what remained after Ward’s arrest and began using it.”
Blake studies the board while Maceo opens his legal pad beside him. Their knees remain pressed together beside the desk.
Luca’s gaze moves across the names clustered beneath Hearthstone. “How much of it is active?”
“We don’t know yet,” Nicholas says. “Some entities have new filings. Others only appear because the same registered agents are involved.”
“And the charities withdrawing from Ember House?” Grayson asks.
“They overlap with the network,” Lorenzo says. “That doesn’t prove the withdrawals were coordinated, but it gives us a reason to ask.”
“I want to reopen contact with Agent Thane,” I say. “The records touch all of us, so I’m not making that call unless everyone agrees.”
Blake looks first to Luca. “I want the answer, but not at your expense.”
Luca keeps his attention on the names beneath Hearthstone. “Not knowing won’t put it back in the past. Call him.”
He reaches beneath the blanket for Grayson’s hand, and Grayson closes his fingers around his. Maceo closes the legal pad long enough to nod. Only then do I place my phone on the desk and dial.
“Thane.”
“It’s Luther Keller. I’m on speaker with my mates, Nicholas, and Lorenzo. We found current corporate filings that overlap with financial entities connected to Hearthstone and Ward’s old operation.”
There is a brief pause before Thane tells us to continue. Nicholas handles most of the explanation, walking him through the matching administrators and dormant companies that returned to use. Lorenzo adds the links to Victor and Dorian’s acquisition structure, careful to separate what they can prove from what they have only inferred.
While Nicholas speaks, Luca keeps his smallest finger linked with Grayson’s beneath the blanket. Blake sits close enough that their thighs touch, and when Luca shifts nearer, Blake braces the cane against his own leg and lets Luca rest one hand over his knee.
Maceo continues writing until Thane asks Nicholas to repeat the name of one of the older trusts. His pen stops when Thane goes quiet.
