“I can’t even imagine what a mess that would’ve been with the stomach bug, a child, and cloth seats. Yuck.” Lanie shudders.

“Exactly my point.”

“That’s the last one,” she says, dropping the photo into the box and getting up off the floor. “It’s all done.”

“We’re back,” Nina calls out, joining us in the office, with Corinne hot on her heels.

I look around the space and smile, thinking about all the things I plan to use it for.

“What’s that grin about?” Lanie asks.

I make my way out of the office toward the kitchen and the three of them follow me, nobody saying a word. “I’ve been thinking a lot about how I can use my gift in a bigger way. To help more people.” I grab the folder of research I’ve been doing, open it, and slide it across the counter to Lanie and Nina.

They browse through the paperwork, and a wide smile slowly stretches across Nina’s face.

“Seriously? This is amazing, Ally.”

I nod. “I’m going to put that prelaw degree to good use. Finally.”

“What exactly does that entail?” Lanie doesn’t look up at me as she continues to shift through the paperwork.

“I’ll likely need to work for another agency and get my three years of experience. Nick put me in touch with a guy who I’m meeting next week to discuss the various paths I could take.”

“White Knight Nick swooping in to help his fair maiden. So cute.”

My nose screws up. “You’re ridiculous.”

“And you’re falling in love,” Lanie singsongs.

My head snaps to her in surprise. “Love? Are you crazy? We haven’t even been on a date, Lanie. Love does not factor in.” I shrug. “We’re just flirting.”

“Stop flirting and get to fu—”

My phone beeps, thankfully cutting off what was sure to be Lanie at her most inappropriate.

NICK

Are you home?

I have something I wanna tell you...

ALYSSA

Everything okay?

NICK

Fine. More than. Today we got the break we needed.

ALYSSA

I’m here. The crew is too, FYI.

NICK

See you ladies soon.

“What are you grinning about?” Corinne asks, glancing at the phone I have in my hand.
