"And she was just so incredibly nice to all of us last night while we were watching the movie," Emma continued smoothly, jumping right back onto the script.

"So we just really wanted to do something extra special and nice for her to show our appreciation," Sophia finished, flashing her ultimate version of a sweet, entirely innocent angel smile.

"Wow," Toby breathed from the back of the group, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and absolute reverence as he stared at the girls. "They are so terrifyingly good at this."

"Yeah," Jake said, nodding his head in total, solemn agreement with his friend. "At least you know that when we finally start dating in the future, my sister, my cousin, and Em are going to be our ultimate personal cheerleaders to orchestrate theromance.” A grin flashed across his face. “We won’t even have to lift a finger.”

Toby snorted. “Yeah, just point to the girl we like,” he agreed. “They will do all the rest.”

Linda looked at the huddle of young teenagers, still not fully buying the whole innocent thank-you picnic story, especially with the glaring addition of long-stemmed red roses and a fancy crystal vase. There was absolutely no way this was just a casual lunch. She realized she wasn't going to crack their united wall of silence just yet, though.

With a soft sigh and a playful roll of her eyes, Linda clicked the key fob. The satisfying thud of the door locks cutting through the air was the only invitation the kids needed. They instantly swarmed the front seat of her car, their hands flying as they carefully extracted the heavy wicker picnic basket, the gleaming silver ice bucket, the plush throw pillows, and the soft checked blanket.

"Alright, let's take it all inside, guys," Sophia ordered with the absolute authority of a military general leading a top-secret operation.

Linda quietly followed the energetic caravan up the porch steps and through the grand front doors of the mansion. Instead of marching through to the sprawling back lawn like she’d originally expected, the kids halted right in the cavernous foyer. Under Sophia and Lily’s intense direction, they began setting up their meticulous trap right on top of the heavy, beautifully restored mahogany cabinet sitting directly beside the main door.

Penny’s prized crystal vase was quickly filled with water, and Sophia carefully arranged the vibrant red roses inside it, makingsure the stems sat perfectly. Jake carefully popped the chilled bottle of sparkling grape juice into the silver bucket, packing the fresh ice cubes tightly around the glass to keep it perfectly cold. The checked blanket was folded into a flawless, neat square, and the plush throw pillows were positioned just next to the basket.

To top it all off, Sophia reached deep inside the picnic basket and pulled out a small, elegant card. With a thoroughly satisfied grin, she propped it up securely against the wicker weave basket where it couldn't possibly be missed by anyone entering the house.

"Okay, Gran, everything is perfect," Sophia said, turning to Linda with a bright, triumphant smile. "We need to go right now before they get back."

Linda offered a slow, knowing nod. She stepped forward and gently picked up the small card, her eyes scanning the neat handwriting. A broad, warm smile instantly broke across her face as the final pieces of the puzzle clicked together in her mind. She put the card right back where it had been, smoothing down the corner before turning to follow the children back out toward the driveway. Looking at the five proud, giggling faces marching ahead of her, Linda realized exactly what kind of magnificent romantic mischief they were orchestrating, and down to the very core of her soul, she completely and utterly approved.

Penny

Penny expertly steered the massive, roaring Oldsmobile back onto the deserted coastal road that led directly to her newproperty, her hands gripping the thin steering wheel with a relaxed confidence she hadn't felt in years. As the iron entrance gates came into view, she reached into her pocket, pulled out the remote transmitter, and pressed the button. The heavy, historic structures smoothly swung inward, allowing the vintage sedan to rumble right into the long, curved gravel driveway. The engine gave one last, satisfyingly deep growl as she brought the vehicle to a slow halt right in front of the sweeping porch steps, and she finally turned the key in the ignition, leaving a peaceful, sunny silence hanging in the morning air.

A wave of elation washed over her chest, making her breathe in deeply as she leaned back against the low vinyl bucket seat. She sat there for a long moment, completely thrilled by the sheer mechanical perfection of the drive, but as she finally let go of the steering wheel, a sudden, warm realization settled deep in her stomach. It wasn't just the thrill of the powerful muscle car that had her heart racing a mile a minute, it was the incredible man sitting right beside her in the passenger seat.

During their twenty-minute journey along the sparkling emerald waters of the bay, the artificial walls and stiff professional boundaries they’d spent weeks maintaining had melted away. She’d found out all about his secret, intense love for classic cars, discovering that beneath his perfectly tailored suits and structured financial spreadsheets, Martin was a man who genuinely loved to tinker with greasy engines. He had confessed to spending hours meticulously restoring old vehicles in his spare time, his face lighting up with a brilliant, joyful enthusiasm as he explained the exact technical details of his suspension upgrades and carburetor tunings.

Penny casually glanced at the handsome man beside her, her eyes scanning his sharp jawline and the warm, genuine smilestill lingering on his features. He was, without a single doubt, the epitome of her dream man, sharing her exact passions while possessing a gentle, fiercely protective soul that left her utterly captivated. She literally had to resist a powerful, sudden urge to pinch her own arm right then and there, just to ensure that this entire morning was not some sort of elaborate, cruel dream invented by her overworked brain.

"That was absolutely incredible," Martin said, his deep voice filled with a mixture of genuine surprise and intense admiration as he looked over at her. "Penny, you handle a heavy clutch better than anyone I have ever seen. You truly brought that machine to life."

"I told you I knew my way around a vintage throttle," Penny laughed, a bright, happy sound as she unbuckled her seatbelt. "But I have to admit, your Cutlass is an absolute masterpiece, Martin. The responsiveness is entirely unreal."

They climbed out of the low seats, the heavy steel doors shutting with a solid, satisfying thud that echoed across the quiet yard. As they walked side by side up the sweeping porch stairs, their energetic conversation still focused entirely on car panels and engine blocks, Penny suddenly froze right on the top step. Her hand hovered in the air just inches away from the brass doorknob, her head tilting slightly as she listened to the atmosphere around the mansion.

She turned her head to look at Martin, her eyes narrowing into a deeply suspicious, calculating squint. Martin instantly paused beside her, his own gaze scanning the surrounding porch before he looked back at her, his brows knitting together in response to her sudden change in posture.

"Is it just me," Penny asked in a tentative whisper, "or is it strangely very quiet around here?"

"And entirely empty," Martin added softly, his sharp eyes flicking toward the side yard where the kids’ laughter should have been echoing. "The teenagers were supposed to be unpacking tools in the dining room, but there isn't a single sound coming from inside."

They cautiously pushed the heavy oak front door open, stepping quietly into the grand, cavernous foyer with their guards fully raised. The very second they crossed the threshold, a massive, utterly overwhelming wave of a mouthwatering aroma hit their senses, instantly filling the air with the rich, savory scent of toasted artisan panini, melted cheese, fresh Italian herbs, and warm, sweet pastries.

Before Penny could even process the sudden sensory overload, a loud, deeply embarrassing grumble erupted from the very depths of her stomach, the sound echoing sharply against the high plaster ceilings of the hallway. The delicious aroma had instantly reminded her body that she had skipped her breakfast this morning, having fled the Hearts Hotel at breakneck speed earlier just to avoid running into Martin after the awkwardness of sleeping on his shoulder.

Martin immediately looked toward the grand arched doorway of the formal dining room, politely pretending not to have heard the loud protest of her belly, though a tiny, amused twitch formed at the very corner of his lips. Penny’s face burned with a sudden, intense flush of heat, but her embarrassing grumbling was instantly forgotten as both of their eyes fell directly onto the heavy mahogany cabinet sitting right beside the main entrance.

Sitting proudly on top of the dark wood was a massive, beautifully orchestrated setup that was clearly leaking that spectacular scent. A large wicker picnic basket sat in the center, flanked by her own prized crystal vase, which was now filled to the brim with a stunning, vibrant bunch of long-stemmed red roses. Right next to the flowers, a gleaming silver bucket was packed tightly with fresh ice cubes, holding a chilled bottle of premium sparkling grape juice perfectly upright. A soft, red-and-white checked blanket was folded into a flawless square next to a pair of plush matching throw pillows, creating an undeniably romantic display.

Penny stood completely frozen, her jaw dropping slightly as she took in the sight. "What in the world..."

"Well," Martin murmured, his deep voice carrying a mixture of shock and sheer, helpless amusement as he stepped closer to the cabinet. "It seems our missing volunteer crew has been incredibly busy while we were out stretching the Cutlass's legs."
