Wait. Was that an unhealthy mindset?

Sonnet shrugged and opened her door. There was always the chance they didn’t commit, so it wasn’t a completely toxic thought process.

Speaking of toxic…Kai.

She could smell him before she saw him climb up the staircase. His scent burned hot as usual, his attitude clear.

Was he ever happy?

He didn’t notice her. His footsteps were slow and heavy, his eyes downcast, his body trying to sink into his clothes like he wanted to disappear. An aura of anger and sadness engulfed him, like a thick fog she could see clear as day, and her ever-so-silent omega reacted before she could stop her, blooming out a wave of her scent as a way of trying to comfort her alpha.

An alpha who hates us,she tried to remind her, but it was no use.

Hate, or whatever it was Kai felt towards Sonnet; she wanted to comfort him.

Kai’s eyes snapped up once he smelled her, and she couldn’t ignore the haze in them. Unlike most people who managed to keep their feelings at bay, his were at the forefront of his black irises, like a monster trying to break free. He was feeling everything there was to feel, so much so that he couldn’t even hide it.

She couldn’t help it. She whined in pain for him.

And hegrowledin return.

“Why are you here?” He choked, pressing his hand into the wall to guide him as he walked.

“I, uh, Jude. He told me my bedroom was this one—”

“No. Why are youherenow? Why?” He was standing directly beside her now with an expression and posture of pureanguish. “Why did you have to show up now? Why not earlier? Why not after?”

“Kai…” Sonnet reached out her hand to hold him but held back. “What do you mean, after?”

“I would have given you the world. But now?” Kai shook his head, trying to hide the tears rolling down his face. Her heart was breaking for him. She wanted to hold him, to take care of him. “Now, the only thing I can give you is space, so take it. Because I don’t know how to be around you without being angry at you.”

Angry at me?

Sonnet’s hand fell on her chest as she felt the pieces of her heart-breaking underneath. He pushed past her, desperate to get away, and slammed his bedroom door from far down the hallway.

Ouch.

Why?

Why does it hurt so badly?

She could hear the others downstairs and couldn’t let them see her like this. She turned back into her bedroom and hid under her blankets, not letting go of her chest out of fear that the pieces of her heart would fall out and be lost forever.

Chapter 14

We’re going on vacation with our omega.

We need it.

But do we deserve it?

Zayden pinched the bridge of his nose as he nursed his glass of whiskey at the kitchen island. He kept going back to that meeting with their managers about the layout of their trip to California and Dr. Burdough. An entire month dedicated to fun with their omegaandhealing their pack bond? He feared this was a dream he was going to wake up from.

It would be nice to get out of this house that has too many bitter memories. Now, new ones can be made. Better ones.

He smiled softly at the thought and took another sip. His eyes flickered over to the pastry box, and his smile grew. Six different pastries, each with a singular bite taken out. Very large bites.

She’s nothing like Juliana.
